AwdalPrince wrote:Yes its true. The slave trade was established in the town of Amud near Borama in the former Adal Empire.
here are the ruins of Amud in Awdal
More archaeological digs are needed in Somalia. I beat there are a lot more ruins to be found from previous civilizations
The nation which has the most ruins in Awdal province are the Oromo. I can count twenty different sites which show ancient Galla settlements and maybe even pre-historic peoples. Just look at the names:
Jaarohorato
Galle geri
Borame
Awbuube
Halimlah
Darbikolah
The history of habashis of the term and who it included is complicated, those who call themselves ethiopian or kush for example is not the same necessarily, the same way a modern egypt has very little to do with ancient egypt in terms of cultural and ethnic continuity. The presence of the habashis and the term itself goes back to axum and the berberia coastal regions. Nejash al-bahri or the lord of the sea, the kingdom of prestor john in european legends and for example ibn batuta's testimony that the habshis and later sidis( literally masters) as the gaurantors of the oriental maritime trade are all refering to ancient and longlived domination of the people of the northeast african coast of the seas and trade routes. The European and those trained to parrot the eurocentric views see any presence of African peoples as an anomoly only to be explained by slavery. The only book to qoute whole sections of futuh was written in India by Haji dabur commissioned by Habshi rulers and nobles of sections of india. The book like futux chronicles the struggle against the portuguese fanatics in india as futux does for the horn of africa...were the lords of india former christian highlanders or were the muslims in the habit of enslaving free muslims , even more absurd enslaving sayids or sidis. Bantu slaves were introduced by europeans into india and they were later called also habshis and sidis this where much of the confusion starts...habshi kaafirs were sent as slaves but they were called kaafir, in fact te term kaffirs of south africa comes from this reference in india, later adopted by dutch to refer to africans in south africa
Some interesting things we know about Imam Ahmed and this era;
1. He had to fight and subdue other Muslims to bring about unity (thus "attacking peaceful regions")
2. Games, Dancing, & music were banned (thus trampling on "peoples freedoms")
3. National symbols and banners were banned (thus "trampling on our national identities"
4. There were constant wars which costed many lives (thus "hindering peace and stability in the region")
All of this supported by Fath al habasha. So lets go back in time 500 years... how many of you would be working with Libne Dingel and the Portugeuse to get rid of these extremists?
Oromos came late in the stage, they were the ones who ate up both the Abyssinians and the Awdal Islamic Republic when the two empires tired eachother out. The oromos came from nowhere.
People don’t just come out of nowhere, and people don’t simply disappear into nowhere. Historically everybody fought and expanded. The Abyssinians came from the highlands of Eritrea and Tigrai, expanded into Gonder, Gojjam, Wallo, Shawa etc. They came all that way, but nobody will say they came out of nowhere. The Somali from my observations, began in the northern regions and expanded south along the Indian ocean, they didn’t come out of nowhere either. And the people who inhabited those lands didn’t simply disappear. The former became Abyssinians, the latter became Somali. Likewise the Oromo expanded into the central, western, eastern, and northern highlands, and some of the lowlands. This is history, people come and go. Languages come and go.
In the case of the Islamic regions in the HOA 500 years ago, the lowlands were inhabited by Somali, and Afar. In the highlands there were a variety of semetic speaking Muslims tribes who the Oromo “conquered”. It wasnt a single state with one ameer. There were many tribes each with their own chiefs and what not. There were also city states that were independent of one another. In the time of Imam Ahmed, we know Zeyla had its own ameer who challenged his leadership for awhile, which was based around Hubat (haromaya) and Harar.
