i'm all for educated, young, somalis running but these old ass men need to give it a rest. if you can't communicate properly in english then you need to kick back and give it a rest. walahi some people run just for the sake of running. they don't even think about the consequences. if a somali runs a horrible campaign in a particular borough/city, it ruins the chances of other somalis running successful campaigns ( especially if you're the first somali to EVER run in that area).

Nicely put. People need to move beyond the Obama phenomena and realize that empty-suits don't translate into election success. At the end of the day, the candidates qualification, understanding of issues and relevancy to the electorate is what really matters. Besides, it is not really hard to run, anyone can run for local office, and I presume that most of these candidates are running simply because of running; without any tangible political aims or visions. It perverts the entire political process and as you said, harms qualified Somali candidates in the future. The papers are already highlighting the fact that the dude running in ND has lived in the state for less than 5 years. It is outrageous.

They are wasting their time. May be they want to be known or could be that they want Somalis to talk about them in the Tim Horton, Star Bucks, 7-11s, and other fadhi-kudirir places. We can't put our back home house in order so why bother run for offices in London and States? I never get it. every somali thinks they can be the next obama. what they don't understand is that obama was born in the u.s., is half-white, was raised by his white grandparents & went to an ivy league university. no white person in their right mind will elect some black, muslim, refugee who can't speak the language properly.

Doesn't hurt to run really. As long as they obtain some qualifications, if they feel passionately about local issues, they should run.

In terms of blacks we have Keith Ellison and another Muslim (name escapes me) in Congress already. Nothing is impossible.
