Meher is the bit the wife asks for and has to be given right? If thats the case the man has the right to negotiate before he agrees finally. 5k-20k is stupid money and i'd be a fool to agree that. Ruunti women later wonder why men dont marry as much when the place such crazy burdens on them. Walahi i recently went to a wedding and the father of the bride was angry about a 5k sterling meher that the bride and groom previously agreed. He only heard when annouced at the wedding, but was angry with his own daughter. Also I was told by an aunty that the meher sum is symoblic, often in somali culture that money was given to the wife in the event of a divorce.

Even a wadaad wedding, i.e. no mixed party etc will set you back 25k. Fellas if your looking to get married soon, then get ur money up.

Looking at my sister's weddings the price of renting a hall, food (rice+hilib for men and women), qaad (for men) and expenditure for the bride all probably added up to 5k. By then the groom is already paying in the thousands, so to ask him to cough up a hefy meher is just taking the mickey.
