I wouldn't be surprised. The first Somali pilot, General Cali Mataan Xaashi, flew in the late 50's. The BBC article says Dr Mohammed Adan Sheikh started medicine in the early 1950's, becoming the first Somali surgeon only to come back in 1963 to assume the job of being the only qualified Somali surgeon in the country.

Traditional healers are also considered "surgeons" in the memories of Somalis. So that could be your confusion.

LOL comparing a pilot to a physician. You do know that a plane didn't existed roughly 150 years ago whereas the profession of physician goes thousands of years back but somehow somalis produced theirs in 1963?

imagine what men like Adan Low, Shire Jaamac, Dr. Maxamed ADaan Sheekh etc had to go through, if you take into consideration the historical context, late 1940 to late 1950 was a time were even the common european didnt have enough food on their plate, for Black Muslim Somali men to then go to these places and achieve high inorder to support their homeland shows strength of character.

Why would i be bitter? I know where you're heading but that ain't it. After islamic scholars i admire physicians the most. Voltage used Cali mataan Xaashi as an example of how 'late' we Somalis were. Despite of us being late we were flying in 1950's, that means that we were flying within couple of decades after the first plane was made. That also means we were flying before we even produced a physician, despite that planes were 'ultra modern' and being a physician was one of the first professions in the world. Where's the logic in that?

I also mentioned that my own mother went through a surgical procedure in Gaalkacyo in begin sixties and that wasn't even a big deal.

If it makes you feel better you can keep believing the bush-doctor that "operated" on your mother in Galkacyo in the '60s was the first Somali Surgeon.

when you question the mans record of achievement you are in effect insulting his legacy, voltage can say what he wants, it has no bearing on the reality that Dr. Maxamed Aadan Sheekh indeed was the first Modern Physician in Somalia. i do realise people did surgery earlier than 1963 but the gap in skill and quality of the Somali traditional Physicians to the first Modern Somali Physician was big enough to actually give him the title of the first Somali Physician.
