Voltage wrote:I think they could be nicer but it just doesn't seem like the people of Hargeisa are cosmopolitan at all. Did the Benadir coast have 95% of Somalia's cosmopolitanism? Plus it doesn't help Hargeisa is not a coastal city and doesn't have history in trade, commerce, and different communities living together.

Even though I support Somaliland independence, I really don't think for its own sake it could do without Mogadishu as its capital. During normal circumstance Somaliland would be the North Korea to Somalia's South Korea.
Don't try to hijack the character of reer hargisea just because some kid was angry seeing a white men only weeks after the thing that happened with the germen man. Tourist walk freely and are treated with kind all over somaliland i couldn't say that about Somalia.

HalfBked wrote:One thing I've always liked about Soomaalida was their disinterest in foreigners and specially tourists. Even as a kid, nobody liked tourists roaming around the city snapping pics or swimming at the beach. If anything, Soomaalida kept away from them and either ignored them or dealt with them as being beneath them. The same can't be said of other Africans, specially Kenyans who worship them. And it was a death sentence for a Somali girl to be seen with these foreigners unlike other Africans who think its something to display.
I am also proud of the Somali people's backbone and strong character towards foreignors particularly Europeans who think they should get a red carpet in every African village, but there is a fine line between have pride and being rude/xenophobic. What we saw in that video is not pride by any stature but something which is far from being cosmopolitan.

Well I'm sorry Hargeisa is not as 'cosmopolitan' as Milan or Paris. The fact that we are the unrecognised part of a failed african state should let you know that Hargeisa isn't all casinos and spas. But then again if you've been to places in Italy, spain, france etc. you would know they are some of the most racist people on the planet and you're complaining about Hargeisa? You should see Burco .

P.s. anti-foreign sentiment and xenophobia in Somaliland is last thing you should be worried about.

Those guys were Hippies, look at the way they were dressed/looked, they could have smuggled drugs or something. Somali people need to be careful who they let in to the country

They look like the nice enlightened liberal kind to me. I would even bet they have some sort of white guilt although secretly enjoying the white privilege. Still, they are not the "bad kind" of the White race by that race's standards. I felt bad for them.

Dont understand this, why would you waste money going to some poor country where you are not welcomed? And you can hardly even go out anywhere? quite strange, im suspicious.

Lol at xamar being south korea. Xamar was just Muqdisho - a one city country at the best of times. And now it's the world's lavatory. If you are so self-sufficient why are you against Somaliland's independence - and claiming "you support S/L seccesion" now out of fake pride and spite doesn't count. The north produced Somalia's intellectuals, and you're talking about "Somaliland wouldn't survive without xamar". We are surving just fine and have been for the last 20 years with no investments or funding, while you have been killing eachother for just as long and have had international money thrown at you. You squandered Somalia's wealth and you want to compare yourselves to South Korea?   Ilbaxnimu ka hadleyaa - your people didn't know their left hand from their right while Hargeisa was 'Hoygi Fanka' - the cultural centre.

Wow, that little kid was amazing. This is the one good thing about Somalis even though they're poor they don't act subserviant to foreigners. I heard that Somalia was the only Country back in the Government days that when tourists would come to Mogadishu airport the airport workers, customs officials would look in disdain at Europeans, foreigners, etc. and they would be so shocked as to why they were not having their ass kissed. Also Somalia was the only place in Africa/Middle East where Europeans, etc. would get deported from
