Good movies are hard to come by. For years now, the industry has been feeding off of graphic novels for ideas and remakes. That isn't a bad thing, entirely. 'Cause of that we had the awesomeness of Nolan with Dark Knight. Truly remarkable. But aside from the rare ones, most are mediocre, at best. For adventure/action/war, the list falls much shorter.
Lords of the Ring trilogy
Bourne trilogy
Star Wars sagas (don't really like it)
The Goonies
Hurt Locker (not one of my favs)
Hero
House of Flying Daggers
Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels
Inglorious Basterds
Enemy at the Gate
Thin Red Line
Saving Private Ryan
That's the best I can do from what I've seen. If you're looking for tha Epic War feel, I don't think you'll do much better, or even comparably close to Gladiator. 300 is also up there for me, but that genre hit its peak from around 1950-1970. Don't bother watching Mongol if that's what you're looking for. It presents a softer side of Genghis Khan than what you might like.
