actually 1988 we welcomed many reer waqooyi(isaaqs) from hargeysa and burco in to Mogadishu.
they were every where in mogadishu. we use to call them XABADO KEENTO. but they where like everybody. my xaafad we had isaaq family who where native reer mogadishu, but they had almost 30 people from hargeysa in their home because of war 1988 in hargeysa.
i remember SHALEEMO KAAASABOBORAALE which was very popular in 1988 because of they use to show 3 films every night and even Italian football leage seria A.
kaasa boboraale was center of REER WAQOOYI, all sudden reer waqoyi from Hargeysa started to inter the cinema, and they did now when filim in on you most be silent.
but reer waqooyi middle of movie they just star screaming. waryeeee caloooow SHUUNEEEEY DEE KU MEEE, GAW NAW. eeyaaahe SHUUNEEEEY.
reer xamarkeena qosol, for us SHUUN means SOMETHING ELSE.
marka shaleemadiii waxaa loo bixiyey SHALEEEMO SHUUN.

Re: let us exchange refugee stories!
For the twenty years my family left the harsh and unforgiving Galgaduud of our forefathers we lived in comfort and security in the pearl of the Indian Ocean. White washed villas and gardens tended by the lesser groups were in our grasp. Since the abolishment of the incompetent civilian government lead by Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, replaced by the military government of Guulwade Mohamed Siad Barre, the words economic development and reform were dancing on the lips of citizens all across the Somali Republic. For the first time, people spoke of women’s rights and modern technology.
But alas all things must come to an end…..
My memory of the events of the early 90’s is hazy. But After December 1990 the good times were few and far between: first there was war, then the arrival of the rebel militias, then the plundering began, and then the government collapsed.
By 1991, President Mohamed Siad Barre was defeated and long gone. Mogadishu belonged to the hawyie clans of Aidded and Ali Mahdi. The infighting between the factions was fierce and no one knew if they would live to see the end of the day. Our ears become accustomed to the whistle of falling shells, to the screams of widowed women and orphaned children, to the rumble of gunfire, our eyes familiar to the sight of men digging bodies out of piles of rubble. Mogadishu in those days, my dear SomaliNetters, was as close as you could get to proverbial hell on Earth. My family’s boli qaran neighborhood in particular was targeted, so sometimes we had to take refuge with our hawyie grandmothers in tiny shacks surrounding our former capital.

Re: let us exchange refugee stories!
I think this topix has been informative and got us close together and better understand each other, we have all had terrible experiences as a consequence of power-hungry rebel leaders. I hope we all learn something by this topix, I hope we all got more patriotic and show more compassion to each other next time we discuss.

I really enjoyed your story, it was symbolic of the good times in Somalia and the war's consequences for ordinary Somalis.
