I think the 77 war was the single greatest mistake of the kacaan regime. Instead of openly invading a neighboring country in the name of Somali irredentism, he should have kept up the support to the WSLF, deny all claims of Somali forces aiding rebel groups, increased the amount of SNA regulars fighting for the WSLF, claimed the WSLF was just an Ethiopian rebel group fighting on behalf of Somali-Ethiopians, and waited for the Ethiopian civil war to play out. The Somali invasion proved to be a catalyst for the entrenchment of the Derg regime, and apparently united the Ethiopians by giving them a common enemy imo.

If we would've just waited for the Ethios to tear themselves apart during their revolution while backing up the WSLF and Somali-Abos as indigenous Ethiopian rebel movements, instead of openly declaring our intentions and turning the world (especially the Communist bloc) against us, we would've avoided much of the problems that came post-Ogaden war.

Siyaad Barre invaded Ethiopia for two overriding reasons:
