This is exactly why I was always against people randomly reading quran and hadith on their own will (on the net) instead of studying it (fiqh)..like how it used to be. I blame internet scholarship for Al Shabaab and people like this.

People like al-Shabaab existed long before the internet. But yes, it is important to study formally.

Alpha...I dont think even Bin Laden would support Al Shabaab today. And groups fighting in Jihad goes all the way back to the time of the Prophet pbuh, to the Sayid in Somalia and beyond (e.g Chechnya). the differences between them and this new group of marauding rag tag infidels are stark.

I just cant see shabaab raping, that just defeats their purpose. TFG soldiers i would believe. Anywho rape is worse than murder in my eyes and the punishment should be castration.

Its rape but a different word/style. A cool arabic word like 'ghanima' or war spoils from kuffar somalis in a random village they are at war with.

I don't like the shababis but it is absolutely ridiculous to paint them as one of them African militias (e.g Congo). If anything, the closest to the ill-discplined African militias are the TFG troops who are much more capable of raping, killing and looting. They actually have a track record of carrying out these activities. He wants us to believe that the most disciplined/principled faction in Somalia is gang-raping women....

But then it IS from the NY times...it's not meant for us Somalis who know better...it's aimed at western audiences who are clueless as to Somali affairs.

Of course Alshabaab rapes Somali women which is just the tip of the ice-berg of the rape of Somalia by Alshabaab be it culturally, linguistically, historically, religiously, ethically or otherwise. They raping Somalia and Somalis upside down, sideways and every other way.

The problem is Alshabaab and their proponents both here in SNet and in the real world operate under perverse logic. To them theft is Zakah/Ghaniima, rape is marriage, murder is justice and lying is dacwa. What, then, do you expect from people with such perverted world view? When Alshabaab forcibly marry a girl to some "Mujaahid" against her and her family's wish, that is rape by another name. When they loot WFP, UNHCR, UNDP offices calling it Ghaniima or force famers and pastoralists to surrender their meager possessions that is theft by another name. When they murder someone for whatever reason, often after ghastly tortures, it is murder by another name since they have no moral or legal authority to be carrying out capital punishment.

But you gotta give the devil his due. Alshabaab might be petty, cruel, despotic, terrorists, mass murders, fascists and viscerally anti-Somali but they do somethings better than the competition. Their administrations are more efficient and competent in providing security regardless of gross violations of human rights. The competition - born again warlords, TFG, and assorted Jabhads - need to up their game if they're gonna convince Somalis who already detest Alshabaab's barbarism to support them instead. No one wants to go to the era of warlords and isbaaro.

So, can Alshabaab's detrators rise to the occassion and save Somalia from the scourge of Alshabaabism?
