Leaving Islam is btw a huge moral and intellectual achievement, so you're right to say I'm proud! ;)

Well I would suspect that atheism has been around since the first human being. I would assume that every civilization during any historical era had those who did not believe in God?

Further than that, I fail to see your point.
There weren't no such thing called Atheism, it was only Polytheistic and Monotheistic faiths, plus they were all ended with a crucial punishment, be it the people of lot (pbuh), the people of Noah (Pbuh) who've received hell-like punishments for their behaviour and disbelief in God and their pledge to their statues.
You obviously don't know a lot about your own religion and its terminology. Here are the two terms assigned to atheism in Islamic terminology:

DAHRIYYAH: One who believes in the eternity of time and ascribes creation to time is termed dahriyyah.

MUATTIL: One who denies the existence of the Creator is termed a Muattil.

These people existed during the time of Muhammed and well before as well.

^ And which one are you?, you don't believe in a Creator no more do you?, The consequences are there naturally, you'll be declined by communities as a curse from God himself, just how Ayan hersi thinks Bill Maher who's also an athiest would side with her when he makes jokes out of her, because your'e a sell out.

Livelife wrote:So, how is your relationship with religion? Are you full-on practicing? Are you religious by name, whilst wanting to be more practicing? Do you care at all? Or are you just irreligious?

It seems to me that Somalis are becoming slightly more secular and irreligious, so I wanted to hear your opinions.
Religion has affected me in some ways. I don't drink or smoke and I have a particular disdain for dogs.

Other than that, I am not a religious person. I live in a part of the U.S where people are generally very irreligious, invoking religion here in public life is seen as unprofessional and very parochial. Religion here is extracurricular and not a way of life, which i find to be very liberating. People worship in their own homes and visit their temples when they get a chance, but in the public square everyone keeps their faith to themselves and goes about their business in a peaceful way.

As for somali becoming more secular, from my observations that ins't the case. Remember that quote by Obama where he said small town folk in America "cling to guns and religion"? That's the case with people in Somalia. Even here in the West, it's increasingly common to see ladies who wear the veil and young men who switch off between being street thugs and over zealous religion bots. Even all the single mothers in America have discovered these "revival" paltalk phone conference rooms where they increasingly spend their time now.

I believe religion should be a benign positive frame work in which people lead their lives, and not an extreme overbearing dictatorial force. Religion used to be the former in Somalia, but now it's becoming the latter.

I don't care of communities will reject me. I don't care if I've opposed a religious majority just to join a secular one. I don't care if people will abandon me or make jokes about me. My opinion is more than enough for me. If I am happy with my opinion, the rest of the world could screw itself. I am my own God. As one notable intellectual, Hitchens, put it:

"I don’t need a seconder. My own opinion is enough for me. And I claim the right to have it defended against any consensus, any majority, anywhere, any place, anytime. And anyone who disagrees with this can pick a number, get in line, and kiss my ass."
