I love Somalis, but the truth is we are 99% tuugo...I say this because what we hear all the time is:
1. "Muxuu ka qabsaday Darajadii loo dhibey"
2. "Wasiirkagayu waa doqon aan dhiig lahayn (That is if he didn't loot).
3. "Wasiirakayagu cadkiisii ayuu goosatay( That is when he is a filthy thief who lootes what was trusted with him).
4. "Manfac ma leh meesha wasiirkayaga loo magacaabay""
5."Meel qalalan ayaa loo dhiibey wasiirkayagii"

What are the causes? Abject poverty? Transformation from geeljire mentality to modern urbanity? Path dependency?
Why are we undergoing social/moral decay?
And more importantly, what can we do to reverse the trend?

I was thinking of creating my own lil' Ponzi scheme wherein I would lavish myself in well-fitted suits and knock door to door within disadvantaged Somali communities proposing single mothers and disfunctional families alike that I run a non for profit Quranic education program that requires all applicants to pay a waiver of $50 in advance and subsequently $200 a month. I would then hire a couple xafids and advise them that I am running a program that will benefit the deen and that they should volunteer simply out of ajar and gain reward from Allah. I would then pocket 90% of this money for "administration fees" and 10% will go to Quranic education facilities. I will then create a framework of Quranic schools using the same system and charge each parent, who think they are paying the Macalin when in reality they are paying the "administration fees".
I would then use this system and introduce myself to the local intelligence, requiring that they pay a fee for me to monitor all terrorist, or potential terrorist-related activitiy within Quranic/Islamic education centres. Thus I gain double income from "administration fees" and my diligent work in keeping an eye on Quranic schools (which in reality are all mine).
After this I shall set up a new fee that states that parents will need to send the Program money for new books, yet I pocket it. Soon my network shall expand from London, too Edmonton to Seattle.
Oh Glory!

very funny but very true too, I come across smilar things but under different names. Here in London, they call it Somali community and I was denied for even pass cards, forget about lunch. I once bought lunch and tried to charge them. But next day, the guy went to the shops before lunch time, and bought some horrible cheap sandwich and placed it on the desk (for us to pick it). he even separated the slices
He did that a couple of days and the third time ( I was there for a couple of days a week), he eardropped us to get food from home. Walahi this guy would call us for even home visit for elder people

Grandpapa, you are epitomize the contemporary Somali entrepreneur; very resourceful. In fact, you could be mistaken for Mr. Ponzi himself.
DafiyoMiriq, oo meeqa sanno ayaa lagu xukumay? Waa intee Amerika miyaa? because in the USA the courts are tough on Ponzi schemes.
Shiniile, berigii hore wadaadku waxuu ahaa nin sharfan oo lahaa haybad. Wadaad laiska ma noqon jirin. Macalim, xir iyo dhowr sanno oo quraan akhris kadib ayaa wadaad la noqon jirey. Maalmahaan waxaa soo baxay dad maalintiina qayilo habeenkiina wadaado ah.
Beans, I think Ayuuto/hegbad is a good thing; it is an institution that has survived. It is a saving mechanism and contributes to alot of good things. However, nowadays children are deprived so that moms and dads can save in ayuuto...

More and more somalis are now buying homes in UK, the craze over overseas properties is fading because buy to let in the UK is safer and they are getting good income out of it, however the property is in the name of the man only most times so the wife and children dont lose out on their benefits.

Great move! Let us just hope that the somali real estate brokers are not Ponzi men and women!

lama, has a point. ive been observing that for some times now , we say here; easy way to be rich, grow beard, thoobka gaabso/sarwaal ka whatever you confy with and open an account to help, poor, orphans, school etc. but what im wondering is : why somalis call any one who speaks view arabic words with beard to say: hebel mashallah sheikh/wadad bo noqday Allah ba hadeyey!!!
it's somali culture nowadays any one can get the title: wadad sheikh, overnight!! all you need is to shown in msques with beard, view arabic words and be loud too and throw words like, kufor, murtad, fasiq" more often.

Hyper, our people are just so innocent saaxib. They think islam=arabs. There are many christian Arabs with names such as Abdullah, Hassan and many other arab names. These christians even say walaahi, Allah etc The somalis think they are muslim.
I have a somali friend who drinks; he used to live in the middle east and he knows the quran; when he is drunk he calls everyone he knows and tell them to worship Allah (he uses Hadith, quran) and despite the fact that everyone knows this, he is called sheikh xxx.
The problem is that these suurwaal gaabs and bearded nutheads are viewed by many somalis as religious people. We had a guy in Europe a number of years ago who had pictures of starving kids from Bosaso and Hargeisa. He was given money by the community, specially women. He was pictured in a Nairobi Villa with three concubines.
