Names will not be kids become better citizens of this world. Names do not guarantee that they will become pious. Somalis need to promote somali names. Names say alot not about your religious belonging but your ethnicity. That is the thesis of my topic.

I am also concerned about the decline of nicknames for guys nowadays. Growing up everybody had a cool nickname whether it was the ciyaal waraf champion next door Qasaaye or boodaaye from the neighborhood or ganeey or daqare or kafarji or gafuur geele. Even looking back all the football players of different teams had cool nick names like dheemanka madoow, cuti, cayrow, sheekhaalow etc.

i beg you differ lama, names has both meaning to parents when they name them and also the physiological effect to kid as they say.

our prophet ordered us to name our kids good names that they wont be bullied or has negative meaning. there is famous poem, the poet was talking his young son who he dearly loved that dead. so he said in his peom crying for his loss : i named him yahya to live but nothing to stop Allah's order... سميته يحيى ليحيا ، ولم يكن … إلى رد أمر الله فيه سبيل

so many muslims and somalis included, they do everything to the bone to be close to Allah, prophet through being close to doing the act of who they believe are better muslim than they are. and therefore hoping their kids will take that person ( ali ra or hassan ra) food steps. nothing wrong with that. if they hope their kids to have that person's charactor.

person who wants to name their kids somali meaning names, up to them , no one stopping them too.

True, nicknames are gone!my theory is that some of them have disappeared because of strides in health care Gacameey, Lugeey, Jiisow, Daqare, etc. While others have disappeared because there are no venues for "kaftan"; Garuun, Gaacuur, Boqorka, etc.

You are a true ciyaalka xaafada saaxib. All my friends had nicknames which were more used than the real names. I also had the same problem; mid aan soomaali ku kasaayey oo la yiraahda Tetano ayaan Yurub ku arkay. Everyone back in somalia knew her name as Tetano. It surprised me when people called her Amaal.

Yahya is Johannes7Jonas for many christians from the middle east.

Names will not take you close to heaven it is the CAMAL....

but in quran, Allah named yahya and no one named before him. so is islamic to us. in arabic means ki noolado.

True, parents do that. Hyper, we need to promote our ethnicity. Think about that. There are billions of Muslims in the world but only a few million somalis. We need to promote somali names.

Hyper, one thing your forgetting is that SOMALI names=Muslim names!

Simple logic; the percentage of muslims among somalis is higher than that of arabs. Needless to say a somali name is a muslim name.

lama what you forgetting is islamic names as iconic names. somali names are somali names that use by somalis whatever muslims or not. the name wouldnt make you a muslim. it's their iconic that makes them important to some of us.

i have seen some people their father or grandpa named goleed and they name their kid after their father or granpa.

hassan name is just a name, but if you intentions to name after sayidina Hassan r.a then that becomes islamic to you.
