Apparently, a lot of white people go to sland and jabuuti. A few months back, I was flying to another state and I saw this elderly somali woman who was going to the same state as I was. We started talking and suddenly a white woman came to us and asked if we were somali, and I said yes. She then pulled out a whole album of photos of her daughter and son law wearing macawuus and baati/goorgarad. The daughter was even doing that pose that somali women do where they pull their baati up and hold it with their armpits. she told us they were in jabuuti and have been there for 5 years.

The girl on the left in this photo is Abby Thomas, who taught ESL in the little town of Bulxar on the northern coast during the late 1960's. While there, she bought one nirig, which was given into the care of a local herder. I doubt she would ever claim them, but it is my understanding she is still the owner of record of 60 hal of the Makahiili herd, descendants of that nirig. The girl in the middle is Virgina Jama, married to the present Somaliland ambassador to Kenya, Mohamud Abdillahi Jama, Safiir. The guy on the far right, past me, is John Johnson, Heello, who has made a career out of recording Somali gabay. The photo was taken at Tallex in 1966.
