To be honest,it depends how much you know about the day SNM was coined, or when it's youthful energy faded. At that time may be SNM was in primordial refugee camps of Dulcad, later on inspired, protected and armed by Mingistu, and it died with him. It's remnants were gidaar jiif, most of that I heard. If it's important for you, to some extent, you could call and ask UNCHR offices in Ogaden, and they shall give you more details. War nagala wareeg!

Somalis won that war. Ethiopians are no match. Cubans came when Soviets had cut off Somali Ammunition supplies. Somalis retreated.

What did you expect the Somalis to do? Fight against a modern army with spears?

Cuba basically came as re enforcement for Ethiopia because of the Russians. Cuba today is trying to capitalise its market. Soviets were a bunch of morons.

Communism is a dead concept. Greater Somalia is still alive and God willing will be created.

You lost, Luis! You better hide till you see a single Korean indhoyar who thinks they won an Ogaden war... or a Yemeni who would beat his chest about the 70's war. Incase, you lost a brother, dad or a relative in that war, I understand your obsession, cause I've lost some to Ogaden war as well. N like you I refuse to believe they died for nothing.

For your information, Ogaden war is a long chain, unfinished and still on battle. Somalia might have went to coma and over sleep due to inter-civil-tribal-wars, but smokes from guns and fresh blood from body's arteries are daily seen in Ogaden, for that reason 85% of the land is under the hands of young brave men and women of ONLF fighters. You will never understand Ogaden issue, let alone to be an expert. As far as I know for last 7 years, you are on the same page. Nothing improved. Relax, now!!

Somalis had a powerful army but this army was defeated and almost destroyed by Cuba and Soviet Union.

Somalia must defeat Cuba and Soviet Union,How? I do not care, that is Somali problem.

Somalia could not defeat Cuba and Soviet Union so Somalia lost the war.

If Somalia does not have EE.UU aid bad luck, they have to defeat Cuba and Soviet Union alone if Somalia can not defeat them bad luck.

You don't need Siyaad Barre to tell you that we didn't win the war, everyone knows we didnt :| I know there is no fair play in war but 3:1 is not a victory to boast about!

This luis gay guy is Cuban right? if my memory serves me well, he and a somali woman clashed in the Guardian board after he demonised the somalis endlessly. He is extremelly racist. Then he looked for somali websites to annoy the Somalis.
Walahi what I remember from that website( and I was a reader at the time), this guy( if he is the one) has an extreme hatred towards the Somalis. He was banned from the website when the posters could not tolerate his hatred towards the Somalis. I am deplored to see him here talking about Ogaden war. hit, get out of here nacaa adiga iyo wax ku dhaley ku yaale.

Cubans were whooped on several towns. Somalis just ran out of ammunition supplies which the soviets were providing.

Cuba army was no match for Somalis. Its just Somalis ran out of bullets. The war aint over yet.

Cubans from a tropical Island in the Western hemisphere were no match to the battle hardened somali fighters, we won the war by defeating our enemy the Ethiopians, their allies both the west and the soviet completely took the war into their own hands and that is why we had to withdraw, fighting two world powers would have lead to the complete destruction of our country. hargaisa was completely destroyed by fighter jets provided by the US used by the Ethiopians, some of them were shot down by the Somalia army but they routinely bombarded hargaisa destroying the city.

Why are you guys denying a fact. Somalia lost that war and had to retreat, giving back the land it had conquered from the ethiopians, in the face of Soviet/communist onslaught.

We lost that war because Somalia over-reached itself and because afweyne knew as much about strategy and geo-politics as an orang-utan with TB. That war shouldn't have even been fought and anyone with 2 brain-cells to rub together can see that. The Somali government should've armed and trained rebel groups in Ethiopia and watch that political/ethnic tinder-box burn.

Get over it.

the more I learn from that war, the more I wish that we had not gone into war. Who knows what Somalia would have been if that was not the case, but the intention was good.
my aunt’s only son was killed in the battle.

Anyway, the Somali national army showed bravery walahi. We should make sure their name should not die. They endured a lot of hardship but also achieved many victories. Within the first few weeks of the war they captured and controlled over %60 of Ogaden and Hawt. Soon Ethiopia conceded that 90% of Ogadenia was in the hands of Somali National Army.

They quickly moved on to Harer, but this was when the Satans realised they have to stop us from recapturing our ancient Islamic city, Harar. History repeated itself as the Portuguese did back in the 16 the century. This Satan disguised as a Socialist, cut our supplies, but not only that ( we did not need that anymore), but armed the Ethiopians with tanks and other tanks that we were unable to buy at the time. They brought 13,000 Cubans and 2,000 Soviet advisors backed with 60,000 Ethiopian army.
They ( the Satan) put Cuban columns between jigjiga and Harar therefore making sure the Somali national army should not get any more ammunitions coming from Somalia. Dhabar-jabin.

The Somali national army in harar and Jigjiga had no other options but to regroup outside jigjiga anad Harar and waited to counter attack. So many of them (probably more than half lost their lives in weeks).
