Not really the ball is always in the woman's court. Normally if the woman asks for a divorce she needs to pay back the mehr, if she never received it there is nothing to pay back. If he really was a rubbish husband then he still has to pay something even if she's the one asking for a divorce. If the man asks for a divorce he has to pay the whole mehr.

There are women who really don't want to get divorced no matter how rubbish the guy is and this is an effective (even if misguided) way to not get divorced. And if she does get divorced she has a healthy nest egg to start over with.

There are 2 types of divorce, one initiated by a man, and one initiated by a woman
through the courts.

If the man initiates, i.e. talaaq and reconciliation is not possible then the man
must pay all the mehr.

If a woman initiates through a court, then she loses her mehr and the man
pays nothing.

There was a wedding in Minnesota few years ago where the girl asked one Kilogram Gold as her mehr and the sheikh refused to do the mehr unless the guy states his job and how he will pay the mehr, after the guy refused to discuss his job the sheikh walked away and someone else in her family did the mehr ritual.

After 5 months I met the guy and asked “how things are going” he told me “they were divorced 2 months ago and she is pregnant with his child now”, I asked “did you divorced the woman you promised to give her one kilo Gold and did you pay her Mehr?” the dude replied “that woman was crazy to demand and entertain herself someone who works in factory Assembly line will pay her one Kilo Gold as mehr”.

These lavish mehr announcements are common in Qurbaha, but I have yet to see someone paid off their posh mehr and it is Haram to promise as mehr something you can’t afford to pay, no wonder they are only married few months.

Wow, all he has to do is to refuse divorce her and if she goes to court , NO MEHER.I hope he is smart and play his cards right.

Good for them if he can afford it! I recall a couple years ago when a groom walked out of the meher cermony after the bride demanded a large amount of money. When the groom to be was surprised at the nikaax cermony, he asked to speak with the lady and she insisted on the big money......................what a shocker it was when the groom to be walked out. People showed up at the hotel for the reception that night and found out the wedding was cancelled!!
