Juan Antonio Samaranch, the then president of IOC declared the Sydney 2000 Olympics "best ever". I don't need Juan to say that it was the best for me to know it. I saw it with my own eyes and I know it was the best. The folks who planned the Olympics that year should be hired for every Olympic.

Jam the Aussies themselves were calling the London games the best ever..
Remember the games aint just about the opening iyo closing ceremonies.. But rather the atmosphere, organisation, infrastructure etc..

Plus anyone who's familiar with London knows that the East End where the Olympics was held was a right dump before, not surprising since it was one of the UK's poorest boroughs.. It did a massive Uturn and looks amazing now..

West
you're biased, being a Londoner and all. :)

I don't remember noticing too many empty seats in Sydney's sports arenas.

The last time OIC president ever said "The best ever Games" was after sydney games, Including the opening and closing ceremony. you would expect an english commentator to say london games was the best, lol

Perhaps.. But non-Brits have said it also.. :|
Waliba the only reason why I said it was great was because I was actually there not because I'm from there..

it has nothing to do with population, its not like the entire nation is competing its more about number of athletes.

United states-----530
United kingdom--541

Monday - It definitely does.. As the US has a wider pool to choose from..

Plus there are advantages to being the host nation and having a larger than usual number of athletes competing for you is one of them.. Heck they didn't even have to qualify for certain sports such as football..
As hosts they were pretty much expected to enter competitors into every sport if not every single event.. They even had people competing in sports they would never normally consider like handball etc..

westlnd, GB has done very well nonetheless  before olympics they set a goal of coming 4th place after US, China and Russia. they beat Russia and came 2nd they wouldn't have done it any better.

Relax. Not all 300million U.S residents were competing. The U.S had 534 athletes representing it and won 104 medals altogether. GB had 557 athletes representing and ended up collecting 39 less medals than the U.S even though It had 23 more athletes reppin' it.

:Heh: embarrassing!
