I understand that, and I understand the logic behind the edict. What I am saying is that clothing is a PERSONAL CHOICE! If a woman chooses to cover herself because she regards it as her Islamc duty, or for practical reasons, or both, that's fine. If a woman likes to wear a mini-skirt, that's fine too. That's all I'm saying here.[/quote]
i see what u mean but what u have to understand is that a mini skirt is not empowering to women. its not practical, its not comfoprtable for the wearer and it doesn't really do much more than attract mens eyes to her phisical beauty.
this bull about naked women representing the new age feminism is misleading to young girls. women in these skirts serve only to reinforce the male stream, sexist views in society.
come on, mad, what do u think when u see a female in amini-skirt. all it does is arouse u'r neanderthal male instincts. it doesn't instigate respect.
amat-allah--ijust felt compelled to explain the reasons, he came on two previous posts that were about this subject.

You have totally missed my point. I am not a woman, and I'm not really into womens fashion. What they were is irrelevent to me. What I am saying is that what a woman decides to wear is HER PERSONAL BUISINESS. Not yours, not mine, not anybody elses but hers. The question here isn't which kind of clothing a woman SHOULD wear, but whether or not she should be allowed to CHOOSE what she WANTS to wear. This is a question of personal freedom.

It seems that we misunderstood each other. all i mean to say was that a short skirt only benefits men, not the women who wear it. it is us that get pleasure out of seeing women in garments like that. they don't find it comfortable or practical.
the idea that we have a choice is ridiculous. if women were to choose what to wear based on a careful consideration, and not following a malestream view of beauty, i promise that they wouldn't choose the mini skirt.
i guess there the ultimate fashion victims. high heels, mini skirts jeans 2 sizes too small, all painfully uncomfortable, but nontheless......must have accessories for the modern western woman wouldn't u say mad mac.

Simplicity
"we follow our own norms.."
You are correct of course so lets see what the Somali norm was till very recently. The first bas reached Somalia in teh late 50s and then only to big cities like Mog and harg. Even in those town very few women wore them. So Somali women's norms - your mother's norm was to walk gloriously braless. Same applies to knickers. Our norm was a guntino or diric and i am not talking about ancient culture here but as late as teh 80s.
Our norm was that women braided their hair at around 12 and kept them braided and uncovered till they got married which was usually between 15-22. she will then cover them loosely and continue to wear guntino or if rich a diri which was see-through.
That is our norm. And now we are having our culture being sold down the river for pittance by a bunch of men who lost all pride and dignity in their blackness, in their africanness in their Somaliness and are replacing our NORMS with Arab norms.
Simplicity I gurantee you, your grandmother walked tall and proud with her breasts clearly poking out from each under arm and she would not have hesitated to suckle her babies openly anywhere she felt like. And now what do we have?
Our women moving around like mobile grey, ugly colourless mud triangles. It is truly shameful. it is NOT and never have been our norm.

I have never worn a miniskirt or high heels, so I can't comment on their comfort. I can tell you that Bui bui is WAY TOO HOT for a desert climate. It is anything but comfortable.
But again, that isn't the point. The point is, if a woman would rather wear Bui Bui, then fine. If she would rather wear shorts and a T-Shirt (which I do know is comfortable) than that's fine too.
