Re: did somalis come to the west with the intention
Somalinet just confirmed it for me.
SEe at times we have these topics amongst friends and what I always thought to be funny is the
Fact tht NORTHERN somalis have plans to go back some for holiday others for a more permanent term
WHERE's the southern folks (according to my limited observation) do not wanna go back or even considering it.. and it has nothing to do with wars or lack of peace..
But simply growing up in a household tht lacks homeland nationalism. ..

My observation is based on my experience. And my experience tells me that the northerns go back home more than the southerns and therefore experience the feeling of homesickness..GeoSeven wrote:Your observations sound like those of a teen kid who has no idea what they are talking aboutwhitehartlane wrote:What has my age to do with my observationGeoSeven wrote:^^ How old are you?
My observation sums up that daroods hawiye and the rest in the south are less knowledgeable about home and therefore feel less attached to it then the rest isaaqs and the northern and western daroods.
Also there are more families in the north who returned from back the diaspora then there are in the south. Fair enough there is war. However there is no practical reason why entire villages have been build whilst vast areas have been added to cities by local diaspora whilst besides construction work is going on in xamar which mainly is business related the rest of the south is homegrown folks with hardly any returnees.
Every single village north of gaalkacyo all the way to the border of Djibouti and west towards Jigjiga has significant returnees...
Also according to most friends from the south they never wanna go back and they will tell you so, where as the northern folks specifically the isaaqs u can feel the passion for back home...
In my understanding the somalis with no plans are shaanshi and other cadcads bajuunti hawiyes mareexaans raxanweynis and the majority of the looma oyaals...
There is no need to insult me furthermore your insulting cheap shots are making you more the immature inexperienced person between the two of us.

The northern half of the country was more peaceful for the greater part of the civil war.It retained a semblance of law and order with effective local and region governments, which is why there was a better established diaspora community. Things are changing. For example, with new found peace in many areas in the South, more people are returning. Right now, Adden Adde International Airport is the busiest airport in Somalia by a huge margin and there are more people inbound than out (fact). Better security, greater number of returnees. A diaspora returnee will go and visit Somalia, come back and re-visit with more family, then more. So on so forth, direct links are established between cousins, aunts and uncles and this paves the way for lots of diaspora returning to those regions. It's as simple as that.
I have no idea why you are even mentioning qabiils. It's all about stability.

imagine for me. I was born in ethiopia. Came to the US very young. Spoke somali fluently till i had to go to primary school but still kinda remember. Have fully assimilated in the west. The idea of moving back seems very clandestine. it has a nostalgic feel to it since i am immersed in somali culture. But i would not move back under the circumstances somalia is still a failed state or still has the potential to become a failed state. Unless some common understanding is found between all the different tribes (likely to never happen) i wont move back.

The more northern the people are the more nationalist and chauvinist they are..

I plan on visiting next summer but I don't see permanent relocation in my future. Tbh I do feel more at home in somaliland but the lifestyle here is more convenient/easy.

Lots of people are going back. I know loads of diaspora people have gone back to Beledweyne recently, some of them went with their kids and they plan of settling down. They could never have done this without the recent stability.whitehartlane wrote:GeoSeven wrote:The northern half of the country was more peaceful for the greater part of the civil war.It retained a semblance of law and order with effective local and region governments, which is why there was a better established diaspora community. You can't make a statement like this. There's no way to possibly prove who is more of a nationalist.

Re: did somalis come to the west with the intention
Have you ever heard of the Chinese saying ''FROM SANDLES TO SANDLES''
It impliese that one always goes back to his/her origin.
Almost ALL Somalis did come to the west the intention of going back home once their short term goals were achieved, but circumstances mainly that of the reality in Somalia/land have derailed their plans as a result they have resolted to bring Somalia to the west i.e. started to live in the west as if they were in Somalia. one just needs to look at their shops/malls, social clubs, and even masjids in their host countries.
So I would say that most Somalis may not have realized their dreams of going back home as they've intended but they have brought Somalia and Somali way of life to the west to compensate for it.
