It's funnier when they name their kids after random Surahs without knowing the meaning. Like Iqra and Muzzamil and my personal favorite and quite widespread, Yasin. It's like calling your kid Alif Laam Miim of which nobody but Allah knows the meaning.

I have seen girls who go by the names Ahzaab, An'aam and Anfaal. Why name your daughters 'coalition', 'cattle' and 'spoils of war'.

lol @ Abdul Guru.
Rasheed is one of the 99 names of Allah. If you want it in your name, you're supposed to call yourself "Abdulrasheed". Am I correct or is there an exception?

Apparently, those are ones who legally changed the name from Abdirashid to Rashid (Rasheed), Abdirahman to Rahman, etc, in order to dilute/hide the Arabic/Muslim sounding name.Titanium wrote:That's nothing. I've met a Somali guy named "Rasheed"

They were better off calling themselves Mike. I am sure they get scolded once a week about their name.Arabman wrote:Apparently, those are ones who legally changed the name from Abdirashid to Rashid (Rasheed), Abdirahman to Rahman, etc, in order to dilute/hide the Arabic/Muslim sounding name.Titanium wrote:That's nothing. Ar Rasheed is one of the 99 names of Allah. It means The Guide. As I was told we are not allowed to call ourselves Ar Rasheed. But Rasheed just means Rightly guided.

Somali names are limited, they probably will not pass 100 if you count all the names both boys and girls. Imagine a whole nation of people with less than one hundred names. Allah has more names you can call him than the nation of somalia has original somali names. Faarax is not a original somali name, but pharoah is borrowed Egyptian name.
Somalis and other Muslims can be identify with Islam just by their name, unless some somali names is market it and spent millions of dollars into identifying with islam, at that time when a Chinese convert will be comfortable with changing Yao Ming to gaadiid, then that name has foreseeable future I'm not sure about most somali names making it pass our children's generation,
I couldn't imagine Farxiyo naming her new born beyonce or Frances that will be crazy but it's normal if she names either jamiilo or faadumo something along Arabic and Somali lines.

Arabman same as the above I guess. As long as it doesn't have the Al before it which makes it exclusive to Allah, then it should be alright.

Re: Why do Some Somalis believe Arab names, will get you to j
i was listening to NPR a few years back and there was this program about names in guatemala.
the ignorant peasants wanted any name that sounds christian, and they liked conception.
the immaculate conception.
so they chose any word sounding like it.
the government had to step in and cancel the names after thousands of newborns were registered as
DEFACACION no shitting...
pun intended
