Re: Starting my Masters this Fall
American tuition is expensive. I've met my fair share of Americans at my campus who were fleeing crazy tuition from B or C rate schools. I'd understand private ivy league schools but why are places like Arizona State or Idaho State or SUNY charging $15K for undergraduate tuition? Are they admitting anyone? It has come to the point that its cheaper for an American to study at top Canadian schools like U of T or McGill paying foreign rates than some second rate school in their own state

25k? The good programs and schools will aim for 30-40K, and that's only the first year. Something needs to be done about American Universities, they are corporations in disguise.Marques wrote:Thanks for the update parrot. But 25k dollars though? Elfruler is right but nobody is forcing u 2 go "private schools" public is as good as private jus mere difference!
Re: Starting my Masters this Fall
I know. Top universities in the UK like LSE charge 36K GBP max...25K seems a great deal compared to what i'm paying (a discounted 5k for a MSc in Maths/Stats at my Uni)...ElfRuler0 wrote:25k? First year? Wasn't a Masters just a one-year course? Or do you guys split it over two years?

Re: Starting my Masters this Fall
If I was full time, it would be like $18k for a year. The cost of the degree is $36k or so no matter if you do it part time or full. This is in state tuition (University of Maryland is state funded school and I'm a resident of the state of Maryland) and the program I got into is better than Georgetown or George Washington and they are private institutions that charge like $60k a year for tuition!! Masters here in the USA are typically two years full time (48 credits or 36 credits)Marques wrote:What kind of fees do they charge to study MA/MSc's in the States? Gimme a rough approximate mate..
I'm paying like $4200 for 6 credits so its like $700 per credit.
Out of state students pay nearly $1500 a credit.
The DC schools are expensive as hell though. They charge the same rate to residents of DC and those from out of the District.
So it pays to stay at my Alma Mater and get the same education at a much cheaper rate. Plus I can take classes at the other universities and pay my UMD tuition.

Re: Starting my Masters this Fall
Good luck nephew. I remember grad school. It wasn't as much fun as undergrad but well worth the two year break in academia. My adviser wanted to push me into doing a PhD but I wasn't going to stick around for 3 more years. Looking back, it was a smart move.
Don't worry. Grad school is a breeze compared to undergrad. The professors are more laid back, YOu are all adults and the goal is to just do the work.
I need to go to vocational school to pick up renewable energy skills especially in windpower and solar power installation, servicing etc

Not all Master programs are one year, some of them are two full years..Marques wrote: I know. Top universities in the UK like LSE charge 36K GBP max...25K seems a great deal compared to what i'm paying (a discounted 5k for a MSc in Maths/Stats at my Uni)...

I thought about Masters in Stats, and then wonder what in God's green earth will I do with Statistics.

Re: Starting my Masters this Fall
The thing is that private universities pay off so their tuition rate is tolerable. They produce much more successful people on average. I am not even talking about Harvard or MIT but even schools like Rice, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, etc etc. I am even willing to suggest that graduates from these schools end up being more paid more and more successful and established than graduates from the best public universities.
It's a class thing. UC Berkeley may shit on the majority of the private schools in rankings but the elitism, the networking, the wine and dine and the name is more powerful.
