I'm somewhat between 2b and 2c. Yummy Mummy I'm a self taught hair care expert PM if you need some advise but let me give you some basics.
1.) Never use clarifying shampoo, if you must use a shampoo buy a sulphate, parabans, alcohol and sodium free one along with it's conditioner.
2.) hot oil treat once a week, also deep condition once a week, but if you're hair is not that damaged or dry you can switch up weeks.
3.)Wear silk/satin scarfs so you're hair isn't sucked out of it's moisture.
4.) Get a good leave in conditioner.
5.) Avoid hot water when washing hair unless washing of the oils after hot oil treatment.
6.) NEVER brush you're hair. Trust me it sounds proper weird but if you really need to detangle get a wide tooth comb or use your fingers. After a while of taking care of your hair you will realise you don't need to brush your hair to detangle or get it to look neat it just automatically will as you're hair becomes more manageable and in a better condition.
7.) Don't mess with your hair while wet. Somalis have this theory of "brush your hair while it's wet, while it's easier to brush" no that is rubbish. If you must brush you hair while wet do it in the shower with a wide tooth comb while you have your conditioner on your hair that way you can make sure conditioner reaches everywhere and you detangle it at the same time.
8.) Reduce using heat products and if you can stop it all together.

These are the basics of taking care of curly hair. It took my a while to get my hair to become health and luscious again and now it looks curly and silky smooth. LOVE IT!

Good luck!!

Thank you very much Euphoria, I will make sure to ask you & update you with any info on hair in shaa Allah :rose:

Not combing will be the only thing I could never follow. Even a few days results in knots, split ends and bushy horribleness that I'd rather not deal with.

Don't you want curly hair? If you brush it, it will result to bushyness. You're not supposed to brush curly hair babe unless using heat products to make it straight or unless detangling with you conditioners while it's somewhat wet but do it with a wide tooth comb (not too wide otherwise it won't be effective at detangling) I promise you your curls will look amazing then. Also after applying leave in conditioner you can seal it in with an oil of you're choice. Mine would be coconut, it s
is great at moisturising. Brushing would only get rid of curls. You can also brush to detangle before showers, before hairs wet. But never brush after you apply products and hair dries otherwise no curls just bushyness.

I totally get what you mean. I brush my hair only with a wide toothed comb/brush and my sisters think its weird but I like the curls it develops.

Oh...and my hair routine is really simple. Besides henna/avocado mix & dub dub I don't do much, I've never dyed it either so its not damaged. :|

What if all these treatments were purposely posted to ruin your skin and hair? Somali girls are evil, evil somali girls

Anyways, I cut my hair a few months back (waist length to a little beyond the shoulder). Why? Never cut my hair prior, not even a trim...because I only had one black mate and she was from Ghana. I thought blacks were all the same. Although, my mum has nice long hair, but she's a princess and I think they can give birth to toads. Anyways, recently I've been stalking somalis and I've realised that they have pretty nice hair. So, I thought, why not. New look for now. It should continue to grow.

YOU KNOW WHAT. IT HASN'T.

Help, Ignore my first line for a min. How long does it take? What should I do? (I don't want to mix random oils and fruit together)

You made me chuckle, and your line about princesses & toads  you're a little out there & eccentric. Welcome aboard :)

1) Maa shaa Allah your hair is long  suggests that it could grow back to it's original length, but remember that you took off what sounds like 1.5-2yrs worth of growth. You need to give it roughly the same time.

2) Regarding hair treatments, I'm sure you've heard these before, but protein-based ones every fortnight as deep conditioning: egg + honey + yogurt.

3) Oiling in between when it's damp, i.e. just after shower, and leaving this in with a protective style for a few days before next wash (you decide depending on your texture what works best, washing every 3-5 days? Once a week?). Best oils are the simplest: olive oil or coconut oil.

Hope you find these helpful. I've changed jobs for a promotion (alxamdulillah) and the stress/adaptation meant that I've badly regressed in my hair-care regimen. Stress inhibits growth & promotes fall-out. In shaa Allah all is khair, need more time to fully settle in and I'll be able to provide love to my hair again.

Thank you, :D

2 years, GAHS.

Cheers for the tips! Really! I usually wash my hair everyday, unless it's straight then I wash it every second day. Once a week sounds duper scary/sticky! :? I've heard of the oils, i'll work something out. Thanks!

Congrats on the promotion! Best of luck with your hair ^_^

So i was wondering what you guys do to take care of your hair. and how i should take care of it. also I'm going to shave my head and start fresh, but my hair is ultra dry right now and breaks very easily. how do i retain moisture, grow out a big curly afro and generally take care of my hair. any types will be appreciated. thank you. also i think i have 3a hair on a good day and between 3b and 3c when i don't take care of it. i think 3b is the most prevalent though.

You can get it but maybe limit the usage especially if you have sensitive skin. Personally my one just sits in my draw I have no use for it whatsoever.
I got it and I really like it, took your advice though so I don't over do it. To be honest I have been using it on average once a month (because I forget I have it) but I love how soft and glowy it leaves my face whenever I do

So my take, it's worth it

If you want to wear your hair in an afro that means it's constantly being subjected to harsh weather conditions so you need to give it a break and protect it as well especially if you want to retain your length.

Generally speaking you add moisture via water and/or a leave-in and seal with whichever oil your hair agrees with. You can do this twice a day (morning and night) and since you wear your hair out during the day you could braid it at night or any other style that means you're not stressing your hair as you toss and turn

Also deep condition and hot oil treatments weekly/fortnightly depending on your hair

Don't forget to trim. Though you want to grow out your hair, having to chop off inches later sucks more than trimming a little bit as you go

I recently brought new brushes for mine, apparently the brush I was using was an exfoliating brush that's why it was so harsh on the skin lol. Now I use about once every week. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
