Mengistu Haile Mariam was not Amhara but a hybrid of Konso (Cushitic), Oromo and Amhara.

He was more Oromo than Amhara. He was born amongst the Oromo particularly the Macha in Jimma. His mother was a Konso and Konso like the Sidamma, are closer to Oromo than Amhara.

His army was 60-70 Oromo and his generals almost all Oromo.

He deposed another Oromo (Haile Selassie).
