That was hardly the point of the article. Perhaps you should read it this time?sconosciuto wrote:But neither has done as much damage as the West. And they wouldn't reach the West's level of damage in a thousand years.Grant wrote:ISIS is taking over from al Qaeda.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/10/world/mea ... -al-qaeda/
"Al-Zawahiri and the core of al Qaeda are locked in battle with ISIS for the leadership of the global jihadist movement -- offering very different visions and strategies. ISIS was expelled from al Qaeda in February after rejecting al-Zawahiri's demand that it restrict its activities to Iraq.
ISIS has captured the imagination of a new generation of jihadists -- from Arab and European states alike -- with its ruthless pursuit of a Caliphate, dramatic territorial gains and relentless propaganda machine.
Its chilling brutality toward non-Muslims and Muslims who don't share its rigid interpretation of Islam echo the behavior of its predecessor, al Qaeda in Iraq, whose vicious attacks on Shia Muslims and moderate Sunnis drew the ire of the late al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.
In short, ISIS' "traipse through Iraq represents a serious organizational, strategic, and ideological blow to al Qaeda," analyst Barak Mendelsohn wrote in Foreign Affairs in June.
So far, the leaders of al Qaeda affiliates have remained loyal (if not enthusiastically) to al-Zawahiri. After the death of its leader Ahmad Abdi Godane last week, Al-Shabaab quickly reiterated its allegiance to the al Qaeda leader, and Nasir al Wuhayshi, al Qaeda's No. 2, remains at the helm of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
Prominent jihadi preachers like Abu Muhammad al Maqdisi and Abu Qatada have blasted ISIS for deviancy."
ISIS and al Qaeda both claim an anti-Western bias, but most of the victims of both are Muslim. You have been following the headhacking and massacres?

Syria rebels free UN peacekeepers
Fijian soldiers, released by Nusra Front, expected to cross from Syria into Israeli side of Golan Heights.

It looks like Nusra Front is the partner America needs in Syria to defeat the Islamic State. For sure, Nusra Front isn't gonna attack Israel now that it controls the border. Who would have thought America and al-Qaeda becoming allies?

From the article:
"Syria's three-year civil war reached the frontier with Israeli-controlled territory last month when rebel fighters overran a crossing point in the line that has separated Israelis from Syrians in the Golan Heights since a 1973 war.
Syria and Israel technically remain at war. Syrian troops are not allowed in an "area of separation: under a 1973 ceasefire formalised in 1974.
The UN force monitors the area of separation, a narrow strip of land running about 70km from Mount Hermon on the Lebanese border to the Yarmouk River frontier with Jordan.
It comprises 1,223 soldiers from Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and the Philippines.
Austria, Japan and Croatia have all pulled their troops out of the monitoring force due to the deteriorating security situation and spillover from the Syrian war.
Qatar, one country in the Middle East thought by the US to have influence with the armed rebel group, said Fiji had formally requested its assistance in freeing the hostages.
US officials have said that Qatar played a critical role in persuading the Nusra Front to free American journalist Peter Theo Curtis last month, whom the front had been holding hostage since 2012."
Qatar and Fiji aren't exactly the US. Qatar finances who and hosts what base?

If someone is enough of an asshole, you would be amazed at the strange bedfellow alliances that will form. Nusra and USA is no weirder than Stalin and USA vs Hitler.

Re: May Allah curse ISIS and send them to hell!
Nusra freed the 40 peacekeepers because before captured them a JN commander verbally gave them "security and peace" if they leave their locations for they wanted to go around Assad army in a fierce battle, they did leave their locations for JN and it seized large grounds from Assad in Qunaitera. then some reckless commander captured the peacekeepers not knowing that they were given security in exchange for fleeing their area of control. when Dr Sami Al Oraidi -top Nusra cleric- was told he contacted shekh Al Maqdisi to confirm his thoughts in the situation, and the decision came out it's islamically forbidden to kidnap or harm someone whom you already gave security and peace verbally even if non muslim.

If they continue to operate the way they do, like releasing hostages for nothing, not attacking Israel from the border they control and not being a target for American airstrikes--I agree it isn't going to be around for a long time.BaastoUnit wrote:Nusra isn't going to be around for long.as the other rebel forces increase their cooperation with the usa, nusra fighters will end up joining up Isis or abandoning.

Alnusra have been attemtping to live in peace with the civilian population.
They have been respecting the culture and traditions of the civilians in the areas they control.
smart move meaning that they will gain and keep support of the public.
I expect them to be surviving longer than other groups, ISIS is a flash in the pan..
once they outlive their usefullness they can be easily eliminated.
