Kids in the Somali context used to be raised communally since they had so many people and the community at large looking out for them. A parent would hardly complain about their kid being disciplined by the neighbour let alone the extended family.

Lakin in the West if you are not taking a keen interest in raising those kids and knowing how each day was for them, you let someone else in your community raise them for you and their values are completely at odds with typical Somali ones.

Ultimately the problem is that a lot of Somalis have been slow to adapt. You can't raise your kids in the West how you may have been raised. The person who lives across the street from you is probably not the girl you went to duksi with who will tell your kid yac on your behalf.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I remember as a kid I was more scared of other somali parents telling my own parents what I was up to. It was like one big communal spy network. I was afraid hebel would tell my parents I was smoking behind the school building ect. Nowadays, Somalis like to revel in the misfortune of other somalis and gossip
