I remember listening to the professor on BBC when M. A. Kuluc (AUN) passed away and he was saying how the marxuum was going to go straight to Jannah because he entertained the people
Anyway he sounds like a typical Somali opportunist, for 20 years he was discrediting Somaliland and kept preaching a pro-Somalia agenda; then when he loses in the presidential bid he pulls a 180 and becomes more anti-Somalia than most landers. At least stick to your moral principles; sadly he probably will win in SL if he decides to run.

I beg to differ (those of you who think he is a flip flopper, secessionist , power hungry etc)
Prof Samatar is one of the few true somali intellectuals who has trodden the murky waters of somali politics. We have people who call themselves professors, doctors etc and who are politicians in Somalia. They have joined the “ waan daadshe” qabiil wagon. They lack academic merits and in the absence of an academic career ( I am not talking about third/four tier universities), they have opted to make a qabilist career. Prof Samatar is different; he is a tenured professor and has decided to do something about our plight. Unfortunately, he thought Somalis were mature enough for change. He failed.
He is a true Somali to the bone and wants to see a strong, viable and democratic Somalia.
Unfortunately, somalis are not ready for those luxuries. We are stuck in the dark ages.
The only crime he is guilty of is speaking his mind. He is not like your low-life prof, sheikh, politician who represents his tribe. He will talk/write what he thinks fit and therein lies a big problem; somalis don't want ppl to express their ideas; they want to hear about their clan will get more funds, more positions etc
Noolow Prof Samatar

Adeer I would completely agree with you had he accepted defeat and chosen to work with the Somalia government in a different capacity. I'm pretty sure the SFG would have appreciated having someone like him under his wing. Instead he ran to his native land, completely reversed his views, and went on a verbal killing spree disparaging the people that welcomed him into their city. If he really wanted to see change in his country, he would persevere when the going got tough, and only when it seemed absolutely hopeless would he give up and switch views. And even then it's unnecessary/unprofessional to run to the media and xaar on the people/system of Mogadishu.
Allahu Aclam whether he is a sincere person or not, but the way he conducted himself leaves a lot to be desired.

Meth, adeerkiis. So called somali politicians are tribal warlords; they will even kill their next of kin to be called xildhibaan, madaxweyne, PM, minister. He was naive into thinking that he could be elected. I guess, he thought he could make a difference. He took a year's sabbatical to initiate a political movement. He was called a traitor by some and praised by others. He went to Hargeisa and he was positively surprised by the progress. Again, he was called a traitor by some and a patriot by others. As depicted in this video, when he throws his hands in the air people claim he is saying calanka iga dheereya. This is the nature of somali politics. You cannot say your mind.
In his heart, he is a somali who wants to see a strong somalia. I don't think he supports somaliland out of conviction that it can become a stand alone nation. He sees Somaliland's progress and any good somali will praise it. Just wait for a few months/years and he will call it a failed project. This is the nature of the intellectual; fadhi-ku-dirirs will say " what did I tell you"? people with a sober mind who want to see the revival of our nation will applaud him.

I do not trust the guy, and many in SL do not either. He is a polarising figure and his own support base is divided. The man is straight out of a Machiavelli chapter; political expediency at its most unashamed.
The man has no morals, loose principles and should not be placed on some pedestal as some intellectual when he has little humility. I hate people who adhere to a strictly idealist world perspective. There needs to be some semblance of realism too otherwise you would completely miss the salient issues.
I don't subscribe to his notion of Somali unity when it has never existed. You cannot change the social fabric and ignore the unique historic processes which have shaped Somali people.
The only realistic solution is the balkanization of Somali territories. Once each clan enclave is stabilized, can we only then begin to think about some sort of Pan Somali movement.
Prof. Samatar? Flip flop

Looking forward to the biannual civil war between sub-sub-clan a and sub-sub-clan b and if we're lucky, we might be able to see always exciting monthly bloodletting between sub-sub-sub clan a1 and sub-sub-sub-clan a2.
Everyone knows it's better to be a tiny statelet than a regional hegemon.

Don't speak for the many in Somaliland and believing in clan balkanization goes against the idea of Somaliland, because Somaliland waa qaran. You sound like a reer Xamar, it is only they that show strong contempt towards this man.

The whole thing went over your head.
The SL public care nothing for this man, I speak for the majority, I can attest to that.

Just because he denied to put on that silly carton hat, he supposedly denies the "calan"

. Mind over matter, he has the best interest for Somaliland at heart. Of course simpletons as you don't see that. The world is all ''black'' and ''white'' to you. You put so much worth into matters like ''flag'' and ''emblems'' that you forgot primary necessities as education, livelihood etc. The issues that drive a nation, that's what this man always focuses on.

What I respect the most about professor Axmed Ismaciil Samatar is that he doesn't deny the history of Somaliland and the absence of a legal union between Somaliland and Somalia. He also opposes the ridiculous notion, spearheaded by so called 'unionists', that Somaliland should 'rejoin' Somalia when it was an equal entity to Somalia in 1960, not to mention that it was the first independent Somali state.
Wether he calls Somaliland 'a failed project' or not in the future, he'll never deny the legitimate right of Somaliland.

Do you read what you want to read and then formulate an assumption on that basis or are you simply just not very good at understanding thematic nuances?
