@Sienna, that man is qorqode. Stay away from him! That is a sign that you're dealing with a miserable and shameful fella! I asked because no sane or decent Somali man would ever question the food that the lady he is going out with is eating. In Somali culture, it is shameful for a man to do that.
So, he is not Somali, but why are you asking us your foreign date? Shouldn't you go to his buddies and his nationalist and ask him?
lol are you being serious?

Anyways you have to eat a certain way in front of people. Personally I get something small but get something substantial to eat when I'm alone. Those cadaans and non Africans are more into the design of the food rather than quantity. Its art.
The truth is the portions these restaurants give you are usually suitable as a snack or an appetizer. Go to these places with people with the expectation that you are going to replace your granola bar

Plus the OP is from England so the portions there are even smaller. Last August I went with fams to this Lebanese restaurant, and the waiter comes and gives us the menu. I didn't understand any of it so I just ordered a chicken shawarma plate. It was 15 pounds so I had Palace portions in my mind. The waiter comes brings out a plate that's half empty and no complementary pita bread. I ask the waiter where tf is the pita, he's like with a confused face it's 4 pounds extra
OP: next time ask your date to take you to a Somali restaurant, and order a sports plate for yourself

Sienna,
In the olden days it was the opposite. The lady invited her man to her house where the family prepared some delicious food. Ninka markuu imaado saxan weyn oo Hilib iyo bariis or whatever was on offer with the meat baa lasoo hordhigi jiray. If he consumes all the contents of the plate, the gal was given a thumps up. If he couldn't finish it, waxaa la Oran jiray kani waa mid xanuunsane faraha ka qaad.

The best part of Somali restaurants: no tipping expected
I once was at a random restaurant and I was paying with debit. The waitress gave me the interac machine and I was like "how do I get off the tipping screen? Thanks"
I only tip if I'm with a lady

It's always the Arab restaurants that have the debit machines with the tipping screen or the random $0.50 surcharge. The old lady at palace always gets cheesed when I use visa instead of debit, I'm just like

Gegiroor is right, laba kala daran ba tahiin, you for pigging out and him for judging you for it.

Nin somali xishood leh would have said abayoo by all means order again you must have not eaten all day. Personally the only time I eat appetizer and dessert is when I go on a date.
Now if you had a habit of eating two meals every date
