Cherine I don't wear the head scarf daily but when I do, I don't feel people looking at me weird. Infact non-Muslims engage more conversations and people ask me questions about the religion more often.

P.s

Why do some girls wear very bright colors of hijab? And I always cringe when I see their eye shadow matching the hijab. :dead:

I used to wear niqaab & jilbaab somali, so I know the pressure to assimilate. Everything is a test in this life sis, but there are some things you shouldn't compromise so that you can retain your faith. I believe hijab to be one of them. Like Tuushi said, even if you were to do it, it shouldn't be due to the perception or fear from others, but rather to seek the pleasure of Allah.

Cherine,

I feel your pain and that of fellow Muslim women who are fulfilling their religious duty in these trying times in this Western environment. I saw men who changed their names because of what happened in the West. This could be a test on you, so stay strong. I want to share a hadith, but let me ask you if you thought of migrating from this land? If you have to choose between fulfilling your religious duty or leaving it due to pressure and threats from where you live, there is a third alternative: Migrating to a Muslim land where wearing a hijab is not a taboo.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say ‘If only I had done (such and such), the such and such would have happened,’ rather say: ‘Allah has decreed and what He wills He does,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of the shaytaan.” Narrated by Muslim (2664).

This is very hard I'm sure. At the end of the day in 2015 For Muslim Men in the West I view it as downright irresponsible and stupid for them to have their Wives, Sisters, Mothers live in a place where there isn't a huge Muslim population. Sure My Wife is Hijaabi, but in the neighborhood, town We live in there are many Hijabis, Muslims. Its either this or live overseas in a Muslim Country. Living in areas Where there isn't a decent Muslim Population is stupid.

I cannot relate but I am sure it's very tough wearing hijaab in the west. It's equivalent to us wearing khamiis and cimaamad everyday.

But I do support the less pious sisters to take it off because I have seen many wear it to parties, bars and videos of some twerking on worldstarhiphop. It makes gaalo very confused.

Cherine,

Hijab is jihad in these times, you're not alone. They're thinking of banning Islam in Europe. My friend's kids started wearing tight leggings and backward hijab as as soon as they became teenagers due to peer pressure. Our kids love Islam but the non Muslims really don't like it and quote Dorkins to you, even though they're Christian. Atheist Dawkins admitted that he still reads the bible for comfort and that he's never read the quran. Its a war against Islam so they can feel less bad about what they did to Iraq and Afghanistan...the people who are attacking you are fed lies every day and they used nationalism to make them hate Muslims. When they see hijab, they see the power of Islam (the power of Allah to us) and how little power they have. Dropping bombs are not power, real strength is perseverance. Even without the hijab you'll be given trouble for being Muslim, then African (migrant), being black and being a woman in that order.
Well said, sister Gedo_gurl!
