Ismail Sheikh Ahmed, 1958
I was sitting in the living room singing the above chant, which is SLNTV News theme song, as I was waiting for the evening News to start, my phone rang. One of my best friend was on the line and I kept chanting " Dhulkayaga .. Dhulkayga .. Wow dhimanayna .. Dhulkayaga " . He said "Allah ha unaxaristo". I replied " Waa run Allah ha unaxaristo Mujahid Abwaan Ismaaciil Sheekh Axmad oo ku magac dheera Ismaaciil Cagaf Cagaf". He kept silent for a while as he felt that I have no clue why he phoned me. I said " Hello". Then he proceeded " Heestaad qaaday aya badanaaba ku luuqayn jiray uu si gaar ah u jeclaa? " . "The great patriotic poet Ali Sugule" I said. "Mar dhawayd bu go'ay" was the last thing I heard. I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart. "Hadhow ayaan wada hadli doona sida iyo salaama". I ended the call and immediately phoned Somaliland. I had only one question on my mind " Where they are going to entomb him?" . I have been informed that the great Ali Sugule will be buried in his homeland " Somaliland" on Thursday October 14th and they were as we were speaking naming a committee who will be in charge of arranging the funeral. I thanked Allah because that great man hails from a nation who dinify their heroes.
Per Hoobariska request, I will post some of Mujahid Ali Sugule's poems. I'll try to round up his poems. For the ease of reading I have divided his poetical hisory into three stages:-
1- 1956 - 1960 Gobanimo doonkii
2- 1960- 1969 Hanki iyo himiladi Cali Sugule iyo Dalka Hooyo ee Xaaraan Quutayaashi gacanta u galay (Niyad-samidi iyo Niyad-jabki)
3- 1969-1991 Taliskii macangagga ahaa ee "Afweyne" , Halgankii SNM iyo Dib u curashadii Somaliland
Hees Wadani ah: Ayaa guulaheen gargaaraa, ayaa garanaaya gobanimadoo, ayey la genbiya gumeystaha?! ( 1954 )
In 1952 - 1954 Haud and Reserve Area hit by one of the worst drought in more than two decades (Since "Maadh Gembiya" drought). Insurgency in Haud and Reserve Area in 1954 along with the severe drought forced ten of thousands into Hargeisa. The poet composed this poem urging the natives of Hargeysa and Somaliland in general to help their brothers and sisters in need and encouraging his countrymen to retrieve the occupied lands. This song was first sung by the great Mahmoud Mohamed well known as "Abdullah Qarshe" , the great Mohamed Ahmed " Kuluc"
and the great Mohamed Haji Ismail Mahmoud " aka Barkhad-cas / Ba Zar'aa" which angered the British government and as a result they were all imprisoned. A Somalilander student in Cairo named Hasan Rabi Igal offered his service. The song was aired in Sawtul Arab radio in Cairo to be the first Somali song ever aired on foreign radio and Mr. Hasan Rabi Igal was honoured to be the singer. Once the British officers in Somaliland heard the song " Walaalaha Hargeisa" band members were released.
Guunyada lo'du wow garaad daran tahay,
Gaajiyo ma ogola haraad gelin,
Gowda iyo usha wey ka gubataa,
Hadii aan la guneyn looma galo,
Gujada weyshu waa ta gaagixisee,
Hadii la garaaco godol male,
Ganbo iyo dumarkaa gareska xidhee,
Guntiga ragu waa isku geedo hidee,
Geyigan tegey gaalku mow hadhay!?
Gadantay oo caradeenii wey gedmatee,
******** oo ******* * wey galbatay
Aan gaadhnee ma loo gurmadaa,
Geelii iyo adhigii gamaankii fardaha,
Gugoo da'ay geedihii hawd
Aan geynee ma loo gurmada?!
Gaashaan qaad xaqiisa lama gudbo,
Garkiyo wadnahay na kala go'an
Guuldaro weynagaa gacmaha madhan!
Garaad inama dheera gaaladu
Gugeenuna waa gudboon yahay,
Guuldaro weynagaa gacmaha madhan!
Godobtii nin qirtay oo ku gowracay,
Gashigii diidan aan wax kaaga gudbeyn,
Gadaan gadayaa gar daranaa!
Ayaa guulaheen gargaaraa?!
Ayaa garanaaya gobanimadoo?!
Ayey la genbiya gumeystaha?!
Hees Wadani ah: Haddaanan (1957) / Music: Mahmoud Mohamed " Abdullah Qarshe"
The patriot Michael Mariano, the Vice-President of NUF party, and the patriot Haji Omar Askar, the chairman of SNL party, opted the following song to be their parties' theme song.
Hadannan qaylo dheer hayaay odhan,
Hororka celiyey ku heelayn,
Hadannan Gumeyste waan u hodmee,
Hanaqa iyo gooynin halbawlaha,
Hadannan dhulka heegan baan u ahee,
Anigu aan hoydee isagu hadhin,
Hadannan ma-hurraanka haanneedka
Haruubka iyo u dhiibin hannadda,
Haddaanan Xamar way hadhsan tahee,
Hargeysaay ku saarin heegada,
Haddaanan oogaha u hawshoono,
Hilbahayga iga maqan la soo hadhin,
Haddanay NFD hingalo dhigan,
Huurkiyo laga qaadin heeryada,
Haddaanan Jabuuti way hakatey, (If it wasn't the Late Hassan Gouled Aptidoon & Ali Aref, Djibouti was going to get independence in 1958)
Hilinka kuwa kale hayaan marin
Haddaanan shanta way isku hooyohide
Hiilka iyo isku raacin hoo,
Haddaanan Rabbi baa hagajin kare
