You see same African players thrive in European matches but when representing their countries on international events do poorly, and are eliminated in the knockout stages.

The field and ball are all same dimensions anywhere in the world but Africans get stage-fright?, hence, never won a World Cup or an Olympic medal in soccer.
Nigeria 96 and Cameroon 00 won Olympic gold at football.
That sums up my knowledge, or lack thereof, about soccer.

World famous West African defenders that play/played for France's National Team

Marcel Desailly - centre back who was part of the French team that won the '98 World Cup and 2000 Euro. Won CL Cup with Milan and Marseille and is the first player to win the CL Cup in consecutive seasons with different clubs. Captained for his country and Chelsea.

Mamadou Sakho Liverpool centre back

Patrice Evra Left Back captained for Manchester U  and France. Under his belt- 5 Premier Titles, a CL cup, and a World Cup.

Bacary Sagna - right back. Arsenal fans know him very well and now Man City enjoy him.

There some bigger names you forgot like Patrick Vierra and Thuram, but I don't expect an american to know everything about the beautiful game.
