"As one with a Jewish background and a lover of Israel who lived there for three years and wrote a doctoral thesis about an Israeli kibbutz, I must say that I do not find anything Ilhan said to be offensive, insulting or wrong. Perhaps unwise as a new congressperson, but brave to raise issues that need discussion. As a Jew, I detest AIPAC, and any congressperson who does not support their line is subjected to political and personal attacks. Netanyahu allowed to speak to our Congress? Very disturbing, at least to me. And the essence of what she said is never allowed even to be raised for debate in our public forums."
You're still alive! Is the letter online?
It is now.
"The Honorable Ilhan Omar
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Congresswoman Ilhan Omar,
We represent a group of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and staff who served in Somalia
during the period 1962 through 1969. There were several hundred of us over that period of
time, working primarily in school construction, health care, agriculture and education, on an
average two-year assignment. A number of us have returned to Somalia in the intervening
decades to help with development, famine relief, election observation and health initiatives;
others have been active in resettlement of Somali refugees here in the U.S.
We all offer heartfelt congratulations on your election to the United States Congress. Our time
in Somalia has significantly impacted our lives and means so much to each of us. If we can ever
be of service to you, please let us know.
Following are a few of us who have kept in contact over the years, and we have joined to wish
you every success in your new position. As we served in every corner of Somalia, so we also
come from every corner of the United States and even from abroad.
With every hope for peace and success,"
