"While I expect Islam to garner a few pro-forma apoligies over the cartoons, I do not expect Western attitudes to change a bit. I think the prognosis is actually worse."
Be it whatever it maybe..the prognosis that is...I dont think any muslim would lose sleep over whne and how they will die..unlike the westerners.
One thing worth mentioning is why is the Holocaust something sacred and not mentionable...we all know what happens to whomever questions...and why the faith of almost one third of the world is subjected to ridicule in the name of freedom of speech and/or the war on terror(we even tolerated this one...since our religion is against violence...if unprovoked...although there are plenty of reasons why muslims should be upset...but lets not go there for now).

What you are seeing is what remains of the Muslim ummah.
Weak demoralised, and still traumatised by colonization(for most people it was only yesterday that you ruled over us at gunpoint, and isreal is seen as an extention and continuation of the aftermath of 1914)
Ofcourse we are losing the media battle, how could we win,
who is we? by the way, there are no major organized muslim groups.
Alqaida and all thier ilk are just a minor nuisance, not really a threat to the west or any muslim state.
These terrorist groups are exaggerated in thier importance for the benefit of the local politics of the USA and the dictatorships that rule the muslim world.(if it wasnt for american stupidity in Iraq, they would have exterminated them by now, states like Egypt and jordan and syria are very good at exterminating threats to themselves)
Everytime a bomb goes of they love it, it consolidates thier power
and allows them to awe the population and gives them a carte blanc from
any human rights abuses.
What are the muslim countries?
What you are dealing with is western created and western oriented
states, even IRAN(its constitution apart from the paralell velayet el fikh, is a direct copy of the french one)
Nobody speaks for islam, there are many different Islamic organization and personalities who do not hit the headlines, becuase they are not organized. Who can blame them , since Islam ,not any secualr political party commands the ultimate loyalty of the popualtions, any move in that direction is seen as a threat by those in power and dealt with at root level.
Ofcourse western attitudes will continue to deteriorate, as this image of a violent intolerant Islam is presented.
The reality is that the confident tolerant islamic civilization of the past is no more, we are dominated completley by the west, and is not independant.

Somebody just texted me to tell me to vote NO in a UK national radio poll (do u think those cartoons should published in England). I have vote non, I doubt it will make a difference.
This is hard for me, I passionately believe in a free society (freedom of speech, thoughts) and ofcourse a free press.

THAT is what burns me. The double standard applied when it comes to adressing this particular issue, and that of Palestine( called "Israel" by the West) who are fighting for the right to make the Temple Mount a solely jewish site. At all costs!!!!! They're determined to erase any perceived Muslim threat by any means necessary. They proclaim, however, that they're willing to live alongside Islam, as long as they dictate the terms. One of which is to make Temple Mount solely there's, and the right to encroach on Palestinian lands. With the backing of the U.S. The main reason the present U.S Administration finds itself in the unenviable position it finds itself in today. That of the most hated regime in the history of man.
quote Gurey "Everytime a bomb goes of they love it, it consolidates thier power

EXACTLY!!! And 9/11 gave them enough ammo to continue the oppression for a hundred years. Much the same way the alleged holocaust gave the jews ammo to excercise their power at will for a thousand years. I guarantee they'll be talking about Hitler 500 years from now, if not more.

"....the West) who are fighting for the right to make the Temple Mount a solely jewish site. "

The Jews and the West have both shown remarkable restraint over this issue.
As I tried to point out in another post, the site of the Holy of Holies of Solomon's temple sat on the site of the altar of Melchizadek, to whom the Bible says Abraham paid a tithe. The Dome of the Rock stands on top of this site. It is sacred to all of the Abrahamic Faiths.
During the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, only the western retaining wall of the Temple compound has come under Israeli control. Maintainence and control of the Noble Compound itself has remained in Muslim hands, the roof of the Dome of the Rock being replaced in my memory by the Hashemite King Hussein of Jordan.
I am not aware of any Christian or Jewish interest in converting the Noble Compound to anything .
Please keep in mind that the Jews ceased animal sacrifice with the destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70 AD. They are now a Rabbinic Faith, based in synogoques. The whole of the Temple Mount is off limits to observant Jews as they are not certain precisely where the location of the Holy of Holies is, and they are forbidden to enter it.
The site is holy to Christians, but other Holy Land sites have more meaning for their Faith. While I am sure Christians would like to have access, I don't hear anybody calling for control.
Honestly, I don't think the Noble Compound is that big an issue. It is control of the land and the symbolism of Jerusalem as a capitol that is still being contested.

With all due respect, that's the stupidest thing i have ever heard. If you truly believe that then, you have been living under a rock or an evangelic christian or a jew.
Over the years, organizations have been created whose sole purpose is to destroy the Al-Aqsa compound and th Dome of the Rock, both are sepearte buildings by the way (a fact most people including muslims aren't aware of).
Many militant evanglist and jews who believe the Messiah won't return till the third temple is rebuilt are behind this movement. They have attempted to destroy the mosque several times.
Here are some links to these organizations:

The jewish government keeps them from blowing up the compound..they know it will be the end of the them. But the movement is gaining momentum as evangelical christians get stronger in America.

To echo Brother Lion's sentiments here, i've seen more than one docu on this issue, and the jews who were interviewed were determined that one day it WILL fall back under jewish control. And you ARE right, it IS under Muslim control, much to the consternation of the radical Jews, who don't want peace with the Muslims, any more than radical Muslims want peace with them. My problem is that the radical jews are not portrayed in any where NEAR as negative a light as are the Muslims. If and when radical jews are portrayed at all.

There was a whole episode of the populat PBS program "Frontline" which was about 3 hours long. They are a small group of jewish terrorists but they are gaining influence. The program was very amazing and somewhat pro-palestinian. It showed an attempted attack on Palestinian all girls elementary school by jewish terrorists. They were about to use a truck bomb. Luckily, the blew a tirea nd the police caught them...

It is because of ignorance that the Muslim Nation is in distress, obviously we are still ignorant. The biggest evangelical Christian and Jewish goal is to destory the Dome of the Rock and to rebuild the temple so in thier views Jesus (in the Christians case) or the Jewish Messiah will come.
Read up friend. The war is fought 90% in the hearts and minds this century, and not in the battlefield.

Lion,
I also have Jehovah"s Witnesses coming to the door from time to time. How many people do you suppose you are talking about, and how credible and powerful are they?
There is not only no mainstream movement to rebuild any Temple, there is no agreement on what form religious services in such a Temple would take. You are quoting tiny fringe Christian and Jewish groups who have little or no following and no practical ability to do anything with the Temple Mount.
What I have seen and read leads me to believe the Israeli government considers the issue of the Temple Mount a negotiating card to be played, but not something they are all that interested in. For one thing, just how are they going to be able to identify the Holy of Holies, and what are they going to be able to do with it once they do?
I think you are both tilting at windmills. The Noble Compound is under Muslim control, and will remain so.

Grant..oh please. Dont' try to belittle this issue. People like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Hal Lindsey;men who have huge followers and control some media outlets (tv programs, websites, newspapers), are behind this in America. They are extremely pro-Israel and want to see the compound gone by any means. May be 20 years ago, we could have dismissed this an empty threats but the movement is growing and no1 can ignore them.
So far, u are the only one that thinks this is not a big issue. Apparently, you have been ignoring this issue.
While the compound is under muslim control, the whole country is under jewish control. It's only a matter of time before an extremist soldiers gives access to a jewish terrorist with a truck bomb.

The Muslim world is not in a weak position as someone mentioned above. Over 90% of Opec members are Muslims and why can't they use oil and trade as a bargaining, or a punishment tool? If the Saudis can manage to cut off diplomatic relations with Britain like they did in 1979 (for trivial reasons compared to this issue), why can't they all do now for a better cause?
