After living in the west for as long as I have, there is no way of denying all the problems alcohol causes. The only reason it is not banned is because it is difficult to impose such a ban and history has taught these people that it leads to a bigger criminal underworld and a loss of revenue. The proportion of alcohol consumers among Somalis and muslims is quite low and would therefore make it easier to enforce. At the end of the day, alcohol and drugs including cigarettes cause many social and health problems and should be banned wherever possible.

Mad Mac

I disagree. Alcohol is linked to a large range of anti-social behaviours. To say that people use the alcohol to act like idiots, but if it wasn't alcohol, it would be something else is rubbish. It is the alcohol itself that makes people do the stupid things they do.

And its not only minority, my friend. Go out on a weekend in Berlin, and then you'll see a large majority of the people are acting like idiots. You cannot deny that. Normal people like me who doesnt drink feel so intimidated and worried that we have to stay indoors. And this is the is supposedly a "free" country where I can do whatever I wish.

You (as an individual) might not act like a dumb fool when you drunk, but unfortunately a large majority of people do act like that on weekends. I seen it, and you've seen it too.

If you in a muslim country you have to abide by the rules just like I have to abide to the rules whether Im in England, Germany or Syria. In Holland I am allowed to do certain drugs (I dont do drugs btw), but it doesnt mean I can do the same in England.

Besides, you cannot compare the right to pray and the right to drink alcohol.

Again, I am not denying that alcohol use can "cause problems." Some people are irresponsible in its use leading to social problems. Some are irresponsible in its use and become alcoholics, leading to serious health issues. But does that mean it should be banned?

Individual use of automobiles is an unneccessary convenience that leads to environmental damage and thousands of needless deaths and injuries every year. Should we banned automobiles? How about Golf? The sport does almost nothing for physical fitness, it is expensive, and a waste of time. Should we ban it? How playing cards? A waste of time that could be better used for society in the work place or doing social work projects.

Should we "ban wherever possible" and social or entertainment activity that has negative social consequences? It won't take long before you are banning everything.

Also, as you point out, when you ban it you create a criminal and unregulated underground market. The obvious result of your desire to ban. Do you still want to ban it, knowing the consequences?

Again, if I want to harm my health by drinking, that's my right. Who are you to say what is right for me?

No I don't agree. "Too much freedom"? Who should determine what is too much freedom and what is not? I would prefer to regulate my own life thank you very much. If you want Big Brother to do that for you, that's your buisiness. But I certainly don't want government interfering in my life any more than it already does.

Individuals need to moderate themselves. What is good for one, may not be good for another. We aren't all the same.

To be honest culture of acohol consumption has been with westerners since the humble begin of man, my amaizement comes from the new generation of Somalis who have find themselve consumed by the comfort and the trapping of living in western setting....weya I am now, almot most of Somalis boys and of course the odd Somali women drink. But unlike the westernes who have been expose to acohol for hundreds of years have developed a high threshold of tolerance for acohol, but the poor Somalis
I have come across a new to this drug..and after a couple of sips they loose their mind and insult the locals on the streets. I believe somali and acohol are not fond of each other not beacuse of religious or cultural factors, is just the power acohol seems to good at arousing the violence and the negative side of Somalis..to much qaylo wen skinies drinks..the produced the noise level found in police and ambulance sirens

Gin and Tonic helps keep you fight off malaria, stomach aches and digestive issues.

A glass of red wine helps prevent heart disease.

So alcohol can be daawo when taken in moderation.
