The problem isn't the clothing people choose to wear, it is whether or not they have a choice. Unfortunately, in Europe, many male family members beat their female family members íf they don't wear hijab. Also, Turkish and other Muslim women here being murdered by their male family members for having non-Muslim boyfriends. Since these people are living in a western society, they are expected to obey western laws. This has historically created friction in Germany.

It is also true that covering the face was not mandated by the Mohammed. In fact he cited the face as one of two parts of the body that need not be covered (hands were the other). Whether it was otherwise allowed or encouraged is unknown. Therefore, we can only conclude that Niqab is Makrooh.

Mac your right about the niqab (although others might disagree from different school of thought)

But your key line is -->'The problem isn't the clothing people choose to wear, it is whether or not they have a choice'

This moral panic about the face covering is pushing for the total ban; and in many places banned, isn't that taking away the simple human right to CHOOSE to wear it.
I know Arabs suffer from a deep rooted form of patriarchy and female modesty is over rated in many places. But that issue can be tackled from another angle not this ridicules notion fighting for women's rights by taking away their right to wear what they wish or feel is right..

Chilli you are absolutely right. This is the root of the dilema. In western society, how do we protect the rights of our female Muslim citizens when their male Muslim relatives are actively trying to deny them their rights? How do we allow women who feel religious obligation to observe that obligation while at the same time protecting women who don't from enjoying their freedom to chose? No easy answer to this one.
