I find everything about the Jews interesting and engaging, but especially how they have interacted with the nations and cultures among whom they have lived, adapting to their environment while retaining a variety of continuities.

Excuse me there Grant, but i'm not sure as to what you mean here. Are you saying that they are the only people/ethnic group in the wold that maintians their identity, and that is why they are persecuted in every place and time? Also, what is the Paganism you are speaking of? What master culture are we speaking of and in your opinion has every other race/group of people joined this master culture?

The Jews were enslaved by the Egyptians, the Babylonians and the Romans, but they remained Jews. They did not become Egyptians, or begin to worship Egyptian gods. Ditto Babylonians and Romans. They did not assimilate.They did not accept the cultures or religions of their masters.

The Jewish diaspora began even before the Romans removed the remaining Jewish population from Judea following the Jewish revolt in 70 AD. They were spread throughout other populations all over the world, always the stranger, always the outsider. Easy to look down on, easy to blame.

As regards paganism, are you familiar with the Shema? It is the principle statement of Jewish faith, a rough translation of which is: Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God, the Lord is One. Is that troubling?

Padishah, I think it's refreshingly honest and self-aware that the Talmud records these lapses. Look at it this way: Islamic dogma states that every culture and civilization had prophets to lead them to the right path. Somehow the Jews are the only ones who got closest to following that path, no? They may have flirted with Paganism here and there, they may have persecuted their prophets and wisemen on many occasions, but compare them to the Iniut, or the !Kung Bushmen, or the Amazonian races, who managed to completely erase all evidence of divine guidance, so that you would swear they were not informed of the beneficial effects of eating dates, for example. The Jews ALWAYS saw the error of their ways and returned to the fold. Aside from Muslims (and maybe JW's too), they are the only other strict monotheists. If Judeao-Christian faiths were truly guidance from a benevolent all-knowing God, Muslims and Jews would be allies against a world of unbelievers. Instead they are at each others throats constantly. The only explanation is that the two religions are merely fighting for a scarce resource (converts), and we all know that intraspecies competition is far fiercer than interspecies competition.

When Balian was in command in Jerusalum, after Salahudin had defeated the Crusaders, Salahudin has the city surrounded. Not once in the entire War did Saladin or any of his commanders preside over a civilian slaughter of the unwashed uninvited Catholic Christian barbarians that had infested the Holy Land. Can't say as much for any of the Commanders, or the troops of Christ upon sight of Jerusalem.

As for Balian, he could threaten all he wanted, but those stood to loose the most were the Crusaders themselves. Al Aqsa could always be rebuilt, and so can the Dome of the Rock. But can the Sepulchre be restored if it was defiled by the same people who claim to have liberated Jerusalem for? Would Jews be able to worship at a Western wall that was destroyed? Balian had no leg to stand on, and Jerusalem was saved only on the magnanimity of Saladin, and his bond with the Christians in his army, the Christians of the Middle East under his rule, and upholding the promise of Caliph Umar made all those years ago. Some pesky Crusader with empty threats is no competition to these aforementioned factors.
