Actually honestly we didnt see qaxooti. The only qaxooti was fleeing Xamar but we fled with the convoy of the president in a fleet of many cars and we were the group that went to gedo from afgooye while the president and others went south to kismaayo. usually families were headed to gedo. After we got to Gedo we took a chartered plane to Nairobi and settled in the hotels. That was the first invasion of Kenyan hotels by Somalis.

My experience would be a luxury compared to what you Dooros went throught. I didn't go anywhere... I was still in HY territory drinking milk and eat meat from HY camels... that is what I went through... just the fact that I didn't like it was the bad part, but nothing compared to what most Dooros went through. Heck the sad thing is Somalis are still fleeing and the chronic instability in Xamar led to new refuge camps like Hagardheer and Ifa. Most of those people are Hawiye and the sad thing is the process for immigration is close to nonexistent for them whereas the majority darod in the early 90's did not spend more than a year in the camps.

But once you were out of the fighting zone, it was a matter of blending into the Reer miyi life... That harshest part was the reer miyi life. Being city people, most couldn't take the harsh life of being a nomad.

personally, I went to my extended family who own camels in Hawd area. Then after six months of becoming a camel-boy, I had enough and went to Daror Refugee camp (still HY territory)... (which was becoming a small city with everything you could imagine available)... after that We went to Addis Abeba and took flight 13 to the West... nothing drama about that.

Funny you say that because alot of early 90's refugees whether Daroods or not say Utaango was a city really a big city at that and they had alot of fun. A lot of early/middle 20's baa isku salaamo ciyaal utaango with grins on their face.

And anyways are you more interested in keeping me in line with your need to believe or do you want to hear my personal experience? Honestly we fled on cars but what you have to understand is majority of Mareexaans escaped the bloodbath of Xamar because we all left in the beginning when things were Muslim iyo Mareexaan. No one is stupid to continue staying in a hostile city with you versus the rest of the population and the army had broken up to clan militias.

Hell our house was getting fired at during the nights when the rest of Xamar was in peace and no one could foresee what was going to happen. We lived in a majority abgaal and duduble neighborhood and those dudes were after us like nothing. That's why my family decided it was time to leave, continuing to stay in xamar wasnt worth being sniped while going for a walk or standing by even your outside gate.

So we left for Gedo and after the real civil war started, we flew out of Gedo on a chartered plane my dad rented. It was w/ alot of other Mareexaans. That is my experience saxib but I totally understand why people went to refugee camps and certainly would not be ashamed of it.

Read Nuriddin Farah's book voices from the somali diaspora, there is a chapter where he talks about being in nairobi at that time and see all the hotels booked by affluent mareexaans/somalis during the early periods of the civil war. you also get to see the kenyans he interviewed and their bewilderment of the "rich" somalis.
