Many people here are not familiar with the political and social history of somalia :?

Walaweyn is a reference to the vote rigging that took place there when there was a referendum on the constitution when the North and South joined.

There were too many votes from that small town and hence the name walaweyn came to signify a dodgyness/musuqmaasaq/ corrupt southerner. After a period of time it came to just describe all southerners.

exactly ..
and that little village of less than 1000 people had more votes than the entire woqoyi galbeed
which in those days was the most populous province of the north.

walaweyn=dodgy corrupt politics, mafia like musumasaq.

= south.

I think that minister was Zoppe..the one who allegedly rigged the votes..

And qaldaans refer to all southerners as wallawayns..though its a very small town.

Gurey, you guys were more like reer baadiye at the time..so we took advantage of you..
No big a deal in the political world..

yes cawar maybe we were a bit naive at the time..
but you can see why the referendrum cannot be respected and we consider it null and void.

legally somaliland and somalia never united in the first place.
