No, at least not in Puntland. Everyone who's been there has told me that, in order to fit in, you need to wear a jilbab. I don't think anything will happen to you if you don't, but you'll stand out like a sore thumb.

Why would anyone WANT to dress in Western clothing in Somalia? You have the choice of traditional Somali dress or the big jilbaabs etc. Our cultural clothes are far more dignified and beautiful than 'western' clothing. You get funny looks in the West for wearing your cultural clothing, and now youre wanting to wear their clothing in your own bloody country.

Couldnt have said it better..nothing more beautiful than our traditional clothes

..but i would never wear a jilbaab

For girl's personal safety do not wear jeans or anything other then niqaab in Southern Somalia.
