What counts when it comes to military power is:
1)Warfare technology.
2)Man power.
3)Economical resource
4)DECIPLINE.
I think the list should be this way.
1)South Africa which builds it own helicopters.
2)Egypt which has both experience and manufactures some tanks.I dont how good they are.
3)Nigeria which has Africa's 1/5 of its population and also is economically strong.
4)Al-geria which manufactures it's own trucks.
5)Ethiopia.
6)Zimbabwe which has factories that can make mines etc.

Clearly, there are many countries that can easily defeat Ethiopia. South Africa, Congo, Egypt, Sudan, to name a few. What's more, Ethiopia only fights with the support of other countries such as the US, USSR, Cuba, etc.

Ethiopias 200,000 + army is mostly made up of half trained conscripted infantry.
Its armoured and mechanized forces are third rate and so is its airforces..

If it borderd either South Africa or Egypt its amry would easily be brushed aside and destroyed,
the same with Eritrea, it survives becuase it is also an army of Infantry conscripts the only difference is that its infantry have very good geographic defenses to fall back on, and have more experience and training and morale than the Ethiopians.
Eritreas armoured and mechanized forces are only a 1/4 of Ethiopias size and also third rate.

In terms of effectiveness Ethiopia is higher than Angola, Algeria, Sudan, eritrea, and Nigeria only becuase it has a large
army thats all, all of the above countries have very low level of training and very old soviet equipment.

nigeria has very good equipment, training & morale

So what Saudi Arabia has Tornados, F-15's and F-16
they have Abrams tanks and severl of the top line weapons on earth,
this does not explain why they are absolutely useless in war.
and why a country that is much smaller like Jordan can Invade Saudia and conquer it with ease..

Its not the weapons, but the training, morale and culture of war

Gurey, there is a great distinction between the states you've named.

Angola, Sudan, and Nigeria are on the same level.
Algeria is on a slightly higher plateau, alongside Libya and Morocco.

Egypt and South Africa are in league with Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, or any East European state.

Eritrea and Ethiopia are on the bottom plateau, just above states like Somalia, Burundi, and Liberia. And only because, as you said, they have many conscripts.

What differs Sudan/Nigeria/Angola from Eritrea/Ethiopia is that the first group of states have GOOD economies. They can actually afford to have decent armies without compromising other parts of their society. Ethiopia and Eritrea literally toss aside everything else in order to keep their tribal-military order of society.

And plus, Sudan makes its OWN weapons and excluding the South and Darfur, the Khartoum regime places its people before its politics. At least to a greater extent than the other nations you've named, except SA and the North African states.
