The part about the base being Mogadishu and the AIDS bit, its just a generalization since most Americans have a stereotype about Mogadishu being the only city in Somalia and that AIDS is a universal disease in Africa - that part was to get a laugh. If he said his mother died of malaria, how outrageous would that be? They made Guled's story over-the-top to reflect the most miserable conditions and they went for the most off-the-wall tragic story.


@ Advo, yeah I mentioned how accurately they portrayed Somalis, from voice to appearance, etc. To be totally honest, Somalis are WAY skinnier than the well-built pirates they portrayed. I actually know why they did so - they did their research, I mean they had Somali voice actors, I bet those guys played a part in helping build the episode.

^If you split Africa in two pieces it would be part of the North, but topographically speaking East Africa or North East Africa would be correct.

Dawwa, I was biting my fingers as the boys approached Somalia, then I saw that they portrayed Mogadishu as a city with buildings, a flag, a harbor, mosques, and a working bus system.

I swear I was awaiting some naked skinnies running around, it was probably the biggest sigh of relief I ever had. Once again, they didn't just go easy on us, they made us look like kings.

Most buildings in Mogadishu are ruins with parts missing.

The city in the South Park episode looked more like Marka or Bosaso not Mogadishu.

I have made a brief visit to Mogadishu last year, it's truly the worst place I ever seen. Of course a city of 1 mil would have some semi-nice parts as you portrayed but the overwhelming majority looks like a modern day landfill.

To be honest, i don't see why everyone is thinking this Southpark episode sheds light on the reality of the piracy situation in Somalia. It's Southpark! It's not exactly the one-stop-shop for journalistic credibility. The average cadaan person will not change their views on the situation one bit, and laugh their ass off in the process. If anything, they'll believe the situation is the opposite of what was portrayed in the episode since Southpark is known for taking outrageous and over-the-top views on situations, which usually fly in the face of reality.
