Re: Why Do Sudanese Think They Are Arab?
hyper, I fully understand what you are saying but I think you don't understand what the others here see in your words. Abd, khaal and khaadim (in Oman and Yemen) are words that were used to describe slaves in the past but carried on being used even after slavery was abolished. In a way, it is like America after slavery (and even now, at times), the words that were used to denote a slave are still being used, though, of course, strongly resisted. So Abeed El Sheikh might refer to the history or background of the actual person but it does not mean that he/she is an actual slave. Bear with me, adeer. This is a case of semantics and, err, a touch of pedantry.
The slavery that Qatar had before 1977 was one were the rich families bought and sold slaves, though even then it was rare to do so. They rather inherited their slaves. But it was clear that these were slaves and their blood money should they die would be the equivalent to that of a slave. If they ran away and were caught, they would be retured to their 'owner', etc.
The ‘abeed’ of today are the same as you and me and the sheikh himself. None of those old rules apply to them and they are, by law and custom free men and women.
This whole thing brings us back nicely to the twit that started this thread and the others asking about Sudan. Underneath it all, they seem to belittle the clan lineage of the Sudanese and imply that they are some sorts of Africans with suspect background. The clan system might not have much going for it today but, in its purest sense, it was a method to distinguish between a free man and a slave. The Sudanese tell you they are Arab by detailing their lineage all the way to their great ancestor in the deserts of Hejaz or Hadramout who are you to question the testimony of free men ya cabd?
hyper, here have three, adeer

But you agreed that slavery was abolished in 1977, how then could one register to be a slave?

I agree. It's very disgusting but it's probably a matter of pride to him.
(This does not mean we agree on the details).

Re: Why Do Sudanese Think They Are Arab?
I don't understand why they called themselves Arabs as well. Eritrea has a better claim being Arab. They should be proud of their African roots, they are descendants of the great Nubians who conquered ancient Egypt and built many pyramids

Hyper you getta leave that place soon bro, you still living in slavery times?
ppl callin you abeed and Khaadim?
Man, I can't stand living in an arab country.
you are the real royal and they are the real abeeds man.
Ethiopians, Somalis and Nubians colonize both arabs and jews for centuries. the Phoroahs were slaving jews for centuries and build them on Pyramids, the Aksum empire use to colonize yemen and the rest of Arab Jazeera, until Islam come.
