It is not about the political leadership, it is about the cultural system of the people. Malaysia, Singapore, Somalia, etc all these countries were ruled by benevolent dictatorships at the same time and each had notable achievements particularly Somalia where they still hold a record in literacy gains but the progress we have achieved since are representative of the general culture of the people.

A cultural evolution has to take in Africa especially to prepare them for modern delivery. This is the foundation and without this foundation all effort will eventually become dissolved and regression will take place.

Unlike the leaders in Singapore and Malaysia who were adept statesmen who rationally ruled their nations while investing heavily in education, social programs and ensuring the masses were taken care off, African leaders including that of Somalia, were kleptocrats interested in filling their pockets at the expense of the masses.

Abdiwahab that is a sweeping generalization that is not at times reflective of reality. I know for example the former leadership in Somalia has respects from all Somalis for not hording money, building lavish houses, or saving money in banks. Imagine a man like a 20+ years president dying penniless with the state houses having been his only property. Accuse him of many things but certainly not that.

In any case, a cultural evolution is the foundation. If such a cultural evolution had taken place in Somalia, the nation might have survived after the fall of a leader instead of disintegrating into nihilistic, primordial stone age like tribalistic fiefdoms based on rock and sand collection.

Eventhough he didn't fill his pockets, he filled the pockets of those who didn't deserve it

Voltage is right AbdiWahab, compared to other African leaders such as Abacha, Mobutu, Bokassa, Eyadema, Bongo and the likes, Siad Barre was a very pragmatic leader who did not exploit his people, but did try his best to have Somalis successfully compete in the world. He was definitely no Kleptocrat.

Singapore is a very extreme example. It makes you raise the question, when a country stops being a republic and becomes a corporation. The Republic of Singapore is also known as a Singapore Ltd. Its Chinese leader received massive critique for threatening his own constituents that if they fail to work hard, they will be replaced by foreigners.

Old Siad was a patriot of the first caliber, god rest his soul. He made mistakes and some of his policies did not turn out so good but he did it with the interest of Somalia in mind and not his own interest in mind. Even his enemies fiercest enemies have never tried to blemish this part of his record.

But let's not corrupt the discussion. You are right about Singapore like, it is a corporation.

The Singaporean youth live in fear ninyahow. If their knowledge and expertise on whatever field doesn't cut it, they get cut off LOL. A foreigner will get the job so Singapore can still move forward at the expense of its people.

The paradox is priceless.

Voltage and Abdiwahab, can you guys recommend any books on the economic history of the west. I t sounds very interesting, I agree, if aficans can apply the same economic principles as western countries (maybe even improve) we could vevntually bcome financially stable. I always thought that economic success comes in circles, first the greeks and romans, then the arabs, then the europeans and now asia. I have a feeling, in the next few decades africa can rise.
