The Afghani war is part of a global agenda initiated by George Bush in 2001. AMISOM are only there at the request of the somali government. Neither Uganda etc want to be there. Afghanistan is much more significant in the greater schemes than Somalia. That's the difference between the two wars. As fighting forces however, the Taliban and Shabaab are almost identical. Both use terrorism for political purposes.

AMISOM in Somalia is the same way that Black Water is in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are both mercenaries forces who are there to earn few bucks and not there for legitimate reasons. They are brutal in nature and can kill and maim as they wish. There is no legitimate Somali nor Afghani governments who has invited them since both of these entities were created to legitimize these brutal massacres.

The similarities between the two movements are obvious but the big difference between Al-Shabaab and Taliban is the vision of the leadership and the agenda that each leader is pursuing. Taliban has local agenda led by a guy who understands the world around him and the limitations of his powers while the Godane faction within Al-Shabaab has foreign agenda that has nothing to do with Somalia. No one has freely expressed what he wants but there are many Somalis who are coming to the realization that he is prolonging the suffering of Southern Somalia for ends that he and his mentors know.

Where do u get the notion that Taliban has a strictly local agenda while Shabaab doesn't. Al Qaeda is based off of Afghanistan and has close ties to the Taliban. Almost the same thing. Taliban has far more foreign fighters than the Shabaab. The notion is absurd
