Gaalkacyo is larger than Garowe, and the North side of Gaalkacyo is larger than the south side.

Obviously Gaalkacyo, and its made out of 4 districts, the south is 1 district and the North is 3. the south is mainly inhabited by the Hawiye clan and the North the Darood clan. Due to the 10 year well development i believe that the north has got a larger population density (higher population per district) compared to the historically more sparsely populated South.

Compare the images between 2002 and 2009 you see the areas have been more populated?, it's about 1.2 million.

I`d say 75%/25%, it use to be 60/40 or something close back in the days, but North Gaalkacyo expanded over the years.

Hargeisa is no where near a million, Somalis tend to exaggerated, I remember how they use to say that the population of Gaalkacyo(the city only not the surrounding area included) was 300k and then I went there only to see that the real population wuxu no more than 100k at most. I would say the population of Hargeisa is probably around 700.000 at most. I think Mogadishu is the only Somali city thats over 1million, and even Mogadishu is probably nowhere near 2 million as some people claim.

I think 1.2 mil is about accurate. It is hard to know for certain but something that Archer said was quite interesting:

Is Hargaisa bigger than Dire Dawa? It sure did not look like and the city proper of Dire Dawa only had 600,000 while the metro is about 1.2 mil.

Hargeisa is bout two times the size of Dire Dawa. Hence one would assume that the population is also larger in a same proportion.
