What does Fidow mean?

Dear Navy9;
Fidow is the name often given to a son that is before it really gets dark. Cawaale (night), Casar (Afternoon); Raage (delayed).
Those were the good old names before the arrival of arab and hindu names.

The name Ayaan is becoming extinct? Is this guy joking?

Ayaan is as popular a female name as Mohamed is a male name. A lot of girls/women look up to Ayan Hirsi many of them present in this forum.

Cambaro
axado
isniino
timiro
mulaaxo

These are some of the female names that have become extinct and replaced by names like Aliyah.

Avicenna wrote:Growing up, most of my neighbors, friends and female relatives had the following names, but lately all I see are knock-off Arab names for little girls, what gives?

Names like:

-Suuban (niece), Abyan, Amran, Filsan (cousin), Ruun (neighbor), Kiin (young aunt), Ugaaso, Falis, Ruumaan (3rd grade classmate), Xukun, Sagal, Ayaan (never liked this name, but it beats "Sowdah" i.e. "dark one"), Siman, etc.

Must we Arabize every aspect of our culture in order to become "more" Muslim? Most of today's names for little Somali girls are Arab names that pre-date Islam, even Amina, Halima & Aisha are pre-Islamic in origin, so why not continue on the tradition of naming our daughters beautiful & positive Somali names?
Those i have heard of before But i think but even among Somali's certain region's tend to prefer some name's most of the Women in my Family are named Roodo, Bishaaro, Nadira, Huda, Doll, etc etc :mrgreen:
