While Islam didn't outright banish slavery it was always against it and worked towards the freeing of slaves, and surely we have accomplished that today. The out dating thing u speak of doesn't apply.

Why wasn't slavery banned outright?

But keep in mind that slavery as a human institution was around for a very long time. And slavery in other parts of the world including Arabia was not slavery like it was in the America's. Slavery in the America's was taken to a whole new level.
