They taught us in school, that street is inside the city whereas roads connect between cities. But here in the US they use street and road to mean the same thing but anyways american english needs to be upgraded.

The other day i was surprised when this white/american guy said it is wrong to say ... I do understand your point... he said say I understand your point...I was like...whatever!!!

I also remember learning to differentiate between street, road and lane..
I remember being told that streets are built up areas.. that all streets are roads but not all roads are streets.. :| And that lanes are in the countryside.. :|

Wouldn't security guard be waardiye?

I agree with you on your other point though. We must purify the Somali language, substitute all foreign words with indigenous terms even if they are from different Somali dialects. For example, waan fahmey (it has an Arabic origin despite being the correct term for my dialect) would either be completely phased out in favor of waan gartey, or possibly even be replaced with waan kasay (even though no one in my region talks like that :lol: ) as a synonym for garasho.

For other words, there should be a Somali language institute where we come up with indigenous technical and scientific terms instead of using Somalized English words, like the Israelis did when they resurrected Hebrew. There probably was an institute that did that before the civil war, but I highly doubt that the terms entered common usage outside scientific or intellectual circles, notable exceptions being Hantiwadaag and other communistic terms :lol:

In Hindi it's Rasta meaning street/road
Then we don't have a language if, all places, Wardheer people speak Hindi :lol: :lol: :lol:
Our language is more culturally diverse than our people.
Weird I didn't know it was Hindi, but my grandparents are originally from Wardheer and that's the only word for street I have ever heard them use. I found it weird almost zero Somalis recognized it when I use it :lol:

No reason to bring politics and xenophobia to language. Evry language borrowed from another, I speak English more than I speak other languages and half of the words are borrowed.

It is Marin not miriin (that is where we get the word Marinhabaabin which means to mislead). All the following words are authentically Somali as far I know.

Wado = Highway
Marin = Road
Jid = Street
Hilin = Avenue

I heard a couple of other words beforebut can't recall them now.
