Re: Simple Observation
Yeah, I remember. People affiliated with MSB's regime took possession of a land owned by family member. This is just one of the injustices that led to the civil war.
Re: Simple Observation
Laamagoodle your trying very hard to find excuses for the former regime. Booli Qaran was a plot of Land taken away from those who owned it by the government so in theory the government own's those properties and people who were living in those homes were all Government officials. No one here is Claiming Hospitals, airports and other national institutions that were build legally but we are talking about the lands that were confiscated illegally by the regime. The Government came to my Grandfather and decided to confiscate 600 meters plot of Land since it was considered a prime area in Jaziira even though he refused to sell it, so what is the justification for that? You are saying the lands were taken for the benefit for the country but does the government not suppose to look out for the interest of the people. Anyways alot of people i know today have regained their land lost during the land confiscation and no government can ever dare come to us and claim it. We got some of our lands back and the rest we shall wait for a fair court/Government system.

Eminent domain, anyone...
btw lol @ "nationalization was a veiled attempt at destroying the merchant class". I'm pretty sure destroying the bourgeoisie was the whole point behind Marxist revolutions
As for Somalia, some people seem to be forgetting that this was the Cold War era, as if low trade barriers and a commitment to "free trade" would magically = massive influxes of FDI in a newly independent African nation in the 60s. The only source of funding available to any nation was from either superpower. When your principal rival in the region is an ally of the West, it's obvious you're going to be Marxist, even if nominally as in the case of Somalia, which no one can argue was ever truly communist. The rhetoric at the time might have been dressed in the language of "class revolution", but the government wasn't exactly curtailing trade and preventing the development of markets.
