Plus there are advantages to being the host nation and having a larger than usual number of athletes competing for you is one of them.. Heck they didn't even have to qualify for certain sports such as football..
As hosts they were pretty much expected to enter competitors into every sport if not every single event.. They even had people competing in sports they would never normally consider like handball etc..

Some of my non muslim friends swore that shyte will hit the fan, they were saying outrageous stuff like "London would burn down to the ground". It was too much for me to take them seriously, got good laughs out of it tho.
