I have seen girls who go by the names Ahzaab, An'aam and Anfaal. Why name your daughters 'coalition', 'cattle' and 'spoils of war'.

Wait what's wrong with those names? They identify you as Muslim which is likely the parents motivation in the choice. It's not like they are meaningless names with no significance.
Also those choices are not limited to Somalis. Plenty of Yasin's around of every nationality.

Not saying there's something necessarily wrong with that (that's arguable though). I just personally find it kind of funny that people call their kids Cattle or Spoils of War for example. Surely if they knew the meaning they wouldn't? Similarly if they wanted to identify their child as Muslim there are much better and more viable options no?Jaidi wrote:Keyblade wrote:It's funnier when they name their kids after random Surahs without knowing the meaning. As for Yasin, it is apparently disliked that parents name their children that as there are no authentic hadith ascribing that name to the Prophet (assuming this is why the name is used).
Ibn Rushd said: 'I asked Imaam Maalik : "Can any person be named with the name Yaaseen?, and he replied: ''I don't think that a person should be named with this name as Allaah Says (what means): {Yaa, Seen. By the wise Quran. Indeed you, [O Muhammad], are from among the messengers.}[Quran 36:1-3].'

Exactly. But I think some are under the impression that the more they imitate Arabs, the more Muslim they will become. :/ What's sad is that many don't seem to realize the difference between culture and religion. Like what's the difference between the names Ubah and Yasmin? Both mean flower but one is Somali and the other is Arabic. And some people give their kids Arabic names and don't even know the meaning.
Re: Why do Some Somalis believe Arab names, will get you to j
You got it wrong. First, Yasmin is Persian, and a specific type of flower. Ta labaad, ubax is generic.CushiticReflections wrote:Like what's the difference between the names Ubah and Yasmin? Both mean flower but one is Somali and the other is Arabic.

The name Rasheed is exclusive to Muslims in the West who legally changed it from Abdirashid. There are also a number of African Americans with the name.InoCabdi wrote:the name "rasheed" means "a guide". it's a name amongst arabs

Rashid is a normal name, it's my bro's second name, out of 7 sons in my house including me, all have prophets names except for two, and even their names are not 'somali' but arabic. And I have a sister who's called Amatullah

^ Amatullah is a beautiful name. BTW, I don't think Somalis believe that Arab names will get them into Jannah. All that's required in Islam for a name is for it to have a good meaning, regardless of the language. The two favourite names of Allah are Abdullah and Abdirahman. Also, naming children after the Prophets, companions and righteous people is considered a commendable thing. It won't make a difference if your name is Mohamed or Shirwac if you decide to not pray, fast, etc.
