Somali lands is mostly rural, about 65%. Food for thought to the question.
True not 65% but 75% of Somali population live in the rural area's the rest live in urban areas.
And yes Somaliland and Puntland are underpopulated compared to South-Central Somalia.
But in general Somalia is a underpopulated country in terms of it's land mass. The country has low density population.
We have the chance to be like the Scandinavian countries that have small population.
Small population plus vast resources= very rich country.

You dumbass these towns and other urban areas account 25% of Somalia's population. Majority of Somalia's population live in rural areas. They might be large towns, but other towns can be larger if Somalia is urbanised.

The main UNFPA Somalia population census is not published yet. It was supposed to be completed and published June last year but I thing they were delayed for technical reasons. Though not very accurate in my view, the most reasonable population estimation for Somalia I have seen is the UNDP 2005 estimation C:\Users\mylaptop\Downloads\IPC-Population-Table-Gu-2010.pdf. According to this UNDP estimation, Waqoyi Galbeed alone is more populated than the two and half regions of Puntland put together.
Any way we have to wait results from the supposed comprehensive census that UNFPA is currently doing in the Former SOMALI REPUBLIC, Somalia and Somaliland.
But my honest and unbiased guess is this:
Somalia and Somaliland= 10 million people. Somaliland acounts about 30% of the population which is 3 million. Punltand about 9% which about 900,000 people. When I say Puntland I mean the regions of Bari, Nugaal and North Mudug. Finally, South central Somalia account the remaining 61% which is about 6 million and 100,000 People.

Any census that ignores the previous census is invalid.
The only census we had was the 1975 one by the somali government only that is valid, until another real census is made.
If you want to make an estimate you need to base it on the last census and then extrapolate.
Now according to that census woqoyi galbeed was 0.44 million Toghdeer 0.258 sanaag 0.146 and sool 0.2.
Bari was 0.15 and nugaal was 0.075 and Mudug 0.209
Toghdeer was greater than bari and nugal combined.
and woqoyi galbeed more than double.
Only the south had higher density and higher population with banadir alone greater than woqoyi galbaeed,
hiiran and bay and bakool and the shabeels each had a high population.
UN estimates are shit, if you follow the estimates in 1994 for burco they will say 10,000 total for burco, since most people left the city during the war you can understand what they mean.

Guray
You are right, at the absence of a recent census, previous censuses should be used and only extrapolated with the population growth proportionally.
I couldn't find results from the 1975 census. I guess there was another in 1986?

Samatar,
If what you are saying is true then the Rahanweyn and Bantus would have been the majority of somalis. Yes these tow farming community are setteled but to claim 7 millions live in the south is rubbish are you telling us that bantus and raxanweyn and hawiye are are more then the rest of somalis by more then tow folds. Utter non sense.
